The 8x57is was the first modern rifle cartridge, introduced in 1905 and has not yet been substantially improved on.
Merely owning one automatically gives you a number of perks, you will find that you are now indescribably classier, more confident, and probably more attractive to the opposite sex. You will soon be finding yourself in a position where women want you and men want to be you....
Now go forth and load up some 200gr Partitions and you will receive total enlightenment.
Yeah, I sure like mine, great cartridge. that is just awesome!! I already feel it

I finally found two boxes of 8x57 Hornady 195gr interlocks here in town. I snapped them up and am looking forward to see how they shoot. Should be a hammer on moose and caribou. Much better performance I think than the Win PP I've used for years.

Yeah I got an 8mm too but unlike CowboyTim's
The 8mm Remington Magnum is a big improvement. Yep, it's the one Rost said was offered to him. I still have it. I haven't seen another one in a very long time.

woodmaster is right on all counts. The 7 X 57 and all the subsequent "X 57's" are based on the 8 X 57 case...as was the 30-03, as has been mentioned. By extension that means all the cartridges based on the -06 and 308 case are, in reality, based on the 8 X 57. I use -06 brass for most of my X 57 cartridges as well as my 8 X 56 Mannlicher/Schoenauer.
I finally acquired a nice, immediately post WWI, 1919-20 Mauser sporter in 8 X 57 by Strover which has the .318 groove diameter. It's all original, oct. to round, full matted rib, butter knife bolt handle, DST's and gratefully NOT drilled and tapped except someone mounted a Lyman aperture sight on it. The Lyman is fine with me. I worked up a 170 gr. jacketed load, swaged down to .320 but, in all likelihood it will never be used. Load of choice is a 200 gr. cast bullet around 1800 fps. I'd take the 8 X 57 over the 358. I have a 9 X 57 and 9 X 57R for the 358 cartridge class.
Husky's are fine rifles. Not the fanciest but solid as any other '98 or '96. I have a Husky in 9.3 X 57 on a '9 Mauser...and it is heaps and loads of fun with that big ol' 265 gr. cast bullet!!! The 286 gr. Prvi jacketed bullet ain't bad but that cast is more fun!

Where can I find historical evidence of that ? Jerry

I’ve had two 8x57’s and two 358’s.
My reason for picking the 358 over the 8mm would be cast bullets. I have several molds for .358. The .358, in my opinion is a better cast bullet cartridge. Using jacketed bullets and hand loading — 6’s. (6 or 1/2 dozen).
I prefer classic. Semper Fi I used to run with the hare. Now I'm envious of the tortoise and I do my own stunts but rarely intentionally

Where can I find historical evidence of that ? Jerry Goes like this, the original 8x57 Patrone(or M/88) was 1888. From this Mauser developed the 7x57 in 1892 and the 8x57IS evolved from the m/88 until it's final version in 1905. Skip back a few years the US adopted the 30/40 Government and Krag rifle, following the Spanish-American War the US realized how badly the Krag with it's rimmed cartridge was outclassed by the Mauser 93 and the 7x57. The US basically stole enough of the design of both(the 30/03 was a 30 caliber copy of the 7x57, stretched out to avoid paying Mauser royalties, nothing more) to produce the 1903 and the 30 Caliber Government of 1903. That was redesigned AGAIN in 1906 yo keep up with the 8x57JS of 1905 giving us the 30/06 and then the 30/03 was later necked down to give us the .270 Winchester. The 30 Caliber Government of 1906 has been necked up and down to give us a number derivatives, the then shortened 12mm to produce the 308 Winchester "Family" (Only because they couldn't get the .300 Savage to feed right in a machine gun).

Tim
I only have 1 real suspicion in that. The 7X57 case is NO where near like the 30-03 Or 30-06. The 7 Mauser is smaller in dia from head to mouth. The 7 Mauser is too short 57 --> 62. I can see stretching but it's too small in dia.
That's the only flaw I see in that ?development ?

8mm has always confused most folks and suppliers J or S? 318 or 323 (8X57) the 323 version is about equal to the 30-06 when loaded to where in a good rifle it can be. IE a checked over 98K not the older 88 commission ones. In the US they are loaded to about 30-30 levels but can be so much more.
