Criteria:
velocity, its all about the V
inexpensive factory ammo reasonably available (at least online)
a rifle that can be customized out the ying-yang
sub 30 caliber (who needs a 30 for most of what we do in the lower 48?)

I can't think of a better combo than a 25-06 and a 280 in 24" barreled M700s... run 85s to 100s in the 25-06, and 120s to 160s in the 280...

a 100 grain BT blue meanie in the 25-06 and a 140 E-tip in the 280 cover a lot of diverse ground...

what say you?

(Spring is coming... finally... )

Give me a 243 zipping 65gr VMax at a max load and my 270 with 130s for bigger stuff.

Looking forward to spring. Hard to believe here it's been in the 50s all week and we don't have any more snow on the ground. smile

I'd go with a .280 AI and a 6.5x284, although I think that either one alone would be sufficient for your criteria.

Obey lawful commands. Video interactions. Hold bad cops accountable. Problem solved.

True. We have used that combination to take a lot of deer and pronghorns, and my grandson used it to kill a very large cow elk a little over a year ago--a complete pass-through.

Great combo there.....

The 25-06/280 is a nice mismatched pair. I did this but 280AI instead. Also have a couple of 6.5s that split the difference well. If one rifle then a 6.5-06 AI or the 6.5x284 but the Creedmoor and Swede would be a good choices too. If you really want speed jump to the 6.5 Nosler or x 300 Weatherby but not many of us need that much speed.

No bad choices in the mid range small bores from 6 Creed on up.

When you throw “inexpensive factory ammo” up near the top of the criteria ladder, I have to go with .243 Win and .270 Win.

As perfect a combo as there is. I have had both for many years.

Several beat me to it. But current on hand inventory would be .243 and .270. 100gr and 130gr NPT's for deer. 55gr NBT at 3500 fps in the .243. I've done this. Oranges at 30 ft simply evaporate. Or, 85gr TSX at 3800 fps in the .270, according to Barnes book...

It's where my purge ended up, plus a 223 to play with.

223 and 243. Or 222 and a Swede. Or a Hornet and a Creed. Or a 7-08 and a 22 Mag.

But you still need a levergun at 30 or larger.

Yes. Common as dirt.

Mine is 6.5CM and 280AI.

I'll probably add a 223, though I really have no use for one.

Hence, the inexpensive ammo. One begets the other.

When that’s your top box to check, you’re going to get “common,” and that’s about it.
