I did, but I sure wish I would have kept it and mounted it on a plaque. I have seen a couple of them throphies mounted on nice walnut plagues and they look plumb nice and make a nice conversation piece. Flinch

Badger,

You "need" to rebarrel to a 26" 7-08 Ackley! Hell, it outruns a 7mm Ultra if you load enough powder...

Egads, now I'm confused. My .284 pushes 140s right at 3000 fps, but I feel more comfortable at around 2950 or so. It is bone stock and has a 22" barrel on it. Now what? Can somebody advise me on a good barrel length? Signed: feeling short in Nebraska...

Well, as Mr. Sniper has so eloquently stated, it's obvious that you need a barrel AT LEAST 26"..........no more, no less! That way, you'll be able to stuff a couple grains more powder in there and LOOK OUT!!!!!! WOOOOWEEEEE!!!!! You just MIGHT get that .284 to push those 140s over 3500!

Guys,
What if WT has the highly coveted "fast barrel" on his 7-08AI? In Varmint Hunter Issue #33, pg 6 Steve Timm wrote about his 7SGLC(708AI) pushing 120s at a phenomenal 3275fpsMV! And he used a 22" barrel! This is what got me into a 7-08AI, you can imagine the disappointment we(my friend built one too) experienced when we read our chronos showing a safe max of 3100fps with 120s. I respect Steve Timm, he has contributed tons of good stuff to gundom over the years but that one definitely left us scratching our heads. Most of the 7-08AI owners I quiz receive about a 100fps gain going the Ackley route in the 7-08. We were no exception. If you do the math, Steve Timm's 22", 7-08AI should push 140s close to 3125fps although he never wrote about using 140s in his 7-08AI. As far as I know he swears by the Nosler 120BT and uses nothing else in that rifle. MtnHtr

All this talk has me dreaming of a 7/08 AI And no mine won't have a 26" barrel.

Well boys,
I've been away for awhile, but looks like I came back at just the right time. Going to have to call the barrel maker tomorrow to see if its not too late to get one of those extra capacity chambers on my barrel.

Maybe the problem is you boys been shootin way too much. Any feller that shoots upwards of 200 rounds a year has got to know what he's talkin about.
Must be nice to get a years worth of shootin over in one weekend.

So how might that capacity issue work upon a 7-08 Double Rifle with 27" barrels.

Will I get 5000fps out of one,or both of them?!!?............

Big Stick, I think with the 27" barrels you should be able to go maybe 3 grains more powder. A couple of tenths more or less probably will not matter too much. Anyway fill those cases right up with a fast powder. I'm thinking something like bullseye ought to do it. Should be able to get around 5000fps, but only from the first barrel !

DISCLAIMER: For those of you who don't know better, and I realize most, if not all, do know better. DO NOT TRY THE ABOVE LOAD!!!

Also, for what it is worth, regarding "fast" vs "slow" barrels as mentioined earlier in this thread. I have a pretty good example. I have two 7mm Rem Mags. One has a 26" Douglas Premium barrel; the other is a factory 24" barrel. I loaded 140gr B-tips over weighed charges of IMR 4350. Used the same lot of W-W cases, the same box of Fed 215's, the same pound of powder and the same box of bullets. Chrono'd the rifles at the same range session. While the seating depth was the same for all of the rounds, one of the rifles, and I don't remember which, was a couple thousandths farther off the rifling than the other. I don't think it was enough to make a real difference. Anyway, the 26" barrel went 3180fps and the 24" went 3240fps.

Oooh, I think we may have stumbled onto something here folks! The muzzleloading centerfire rifle! Better copyright that one!

I'm guessing what he does is fill his brass, carefully chamber it and then pour a few more grains down the barrel followed by the projectile of choice and rammed home with a rod.

Dang, with the extra barrel length I could get a LOT more powder in there !

Come on guys.

WTS should have enough carpet burns.

In fact I'm starting to duck as I walk in.

He should know that the board has some seasoned players by now.

What do you say lets make some room on the bench?

Pun intended.
