I was given advice similar to what most of these guys are saying. The 270 can be a great elk gun with premium ammo like Barnes’s TTSX or Nosler Partitions. Especially for cow elk hunts, the 270 seems very popular and very successful. I’ve heard from more than a couple buddies who lived out west that the 7mag is overrated.

There’s no need for fancy bullets in the 270. Two of the most accomplished elk hunters I know use 270s. One uses 130 Hornady spitzers, the other whatever Federal blue box ammo is on sale. The amount of elk downed by those guys, many of which were big bulls, could no doubt fill a semi trailer or two.
The friend who thinks a 7 Mag is necessary for elk is the idiot, not the 270 buyer.
