And quite honestly, who gives a flying phuqq what a kid "thinks". Sit down, shut up, and do what you're told.

Should Students Protesting Guns be Punished for Missing Class? The matter has noting to do with a "protest", as such. If the school is performing its proper role and the teachers is doing great work, the students who absent themselves are inflicting their own punishment. The object of the class is LEARNING and the best class situations teach students to take responsibility for their own learning, and hold them to that standard. Any lesser approach is some degree of failure. If one purposely avoids a properly presented class, one is inflicting self-punishment. The main issue with the public education system is that it is no longer directed towards academia, it's goals have shifted towards social reconstruction through indoctrination of a socialist agenda. Individual exceptionalism is no longer a favored attribute. It's more important for everyone to get a trophy then for one individual to excel through their own applied efforts. Edited to add: Ask paddler the benifits to the ruling class of being able to keep all the sheep hemmed up in one pen. Some of the weaknesses and misdirected efforts you note here also bother me - a bunch. But, there is no overall "public education system" in the US. The aims, efforts and outcomes of public schools vary greatly by state and by community - and some are quite excellent. Others are poor. Quite a number are somewhere in between. In my school there is zero effort for "social reconstruction" and zero "indoctrination of a socialist agenda.". Gaining sound fundamental skills, developing one's unique talents and showing exceptional performance are expectations for every student. There are no participation trophies - showing up is not an attribute. I have enjoyed my students and loved working with them, and have zero time or respect for educational pretenders.

The wife had a sub assignment today, in a school of 4,500 students 1,000 had brought the required note signed by a parent. Not all left class for the protest, one class the wife taught had 6 students who had the note and only one left and returned. In another class only one student left for the protest and aparrently took the rest of the day off as they never returned.

To All,
The "protesting students", who walked out of class this week, had best be GLAD that I'm not the superintendent of their ISD, as all of them would be suspended for 1-3 days & receive a ZERO for the time that they failed to remain in class. (IF the network news was truthful this evening, MOST students stayed out all day & many didn't bother to even attend the "protest" & went elsewhere.).
We don't allow middle-school & HS students to vote, hold office, drink alcohol and most other things that adults can lawfully do. Most adults generally ignore their immature/ignorant opinions and/or chuckle about those half-baked notions. - They simply are unable to have mature opinions because they themselves are "wet behind the ears kids".

Missing class for whatever reason should be considered a cut and be subject to appropriate penalty. Why should missing class for this cause be any different, if you give them a pass in this instance where will it end? It's different because the kids are marching for their unalienable right to Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness. Especially the first one, which trumps these sickos' right to buy an AR 15.

So, why didn't the teachers just give a pop quiz when they all left? Anyone who left shouldn't be able to make it up and fail for the day. Just try taking a day off to go hunting or fishing. You'll be told school is too important to miss for those things.

Realistically in two weeks I am taking my Sophomore sections of Global Issues to the Fairbanks Correctional Center(Jail) so that they can see first hand what is like when you are a "liberal student chit" and give up your liberties. I would sure like those students doing the walkouts to have to take a trip down through D-block where the dudes like to catcall the boyish looking snowflakes and the jail women tend to catcall the social justice warrior chicks. Sure would fix there little wagons quick.

I just got off the phone with comms director for our sch sys.
Students walking out must a note from parents for this dismissal. If not, they will get In-School Suspension.
What the hell is "In School Suspension"?........or should I even ask?

ISS = Stuck in a room all day. At my high school you’d get the whole days assignments in the morning and then be stuck at a desk for the entire day. Aside from 4 or 5 piss breaks you just sat there and weren’t allowed to get up.
Kinda a last step before they kicked ya out of school for a few days entirely.
It beat Saturday School.
