If you are shooting that far, the longer barrel.

20” all the way.
The only thing the extra 4” buys you.... is weight.
PS..... at 24” it ain’t a CTR anymore.... it’s just a TR.
You better pray to the God of Skinny Punks that this wind doesn't pick up......

24" all the way. More stable off hand and also in partially braced shooting, easier on the ears, and more velocity. If you were running a can, I'd say 20" but since you're not it's easy, go longer. A 24" barreled short action rifle is still plenty short.

A 24" barreled short action rifle is still plenty short. They aren't short action, actually. Either way, I've carried enough 24" bolt guns for work they don't bother me but I think a 20" is plenty for what the OP wants. I won the TAC A1 a couple weeks ago at a rifle match which is like a 24" CTR with chassis and I wouldn't be handicapped with it if barrel was 20". I may get the 20" version in .308

Out to 500, you're not giving up much of anything going from 24 to 20". Since you throw in hunting, I would trade the weight savings from 4" of barrel for the 75-100 fps any day.

I'd SWFA a T3 and chop it to 20" in a heartbeat.

20” for me. I put a suppressor on it though so I didn’t want it too long with the can on. I’d still go 20 even if I wasn’t running a can.

I'd SWFA a T3 and chop it to 20" in a heartbeat. Not a bad way to rock. I've got a T3 243 thats just smoking accurate. And I don't really want to touch it. But if it held up at 20...I'd do it.

When I first started posting I would never have believed I'd write this, but my elk experience here in AZ indicates that shooting over 500 is a very handy skill hunting "out west". For 500 max , 20 " all day long.

If you are shooting with out ear plugs, 24" is the way to go.

20”. I shoot over 1000m regularly with a 6.5 Creedmoor CTR. I see no advantage to a 24” barrel. I do see a few disadvantages if the rifle is carried.

There was a time, "Members" optimum barrel length was 23" - wrapped in blue tape
