So building my first AR 15. One upper has a classic firearms barrel and the other will have a Shilen barrel.
Everything I know I have recently read or watched a video on.
It comes to the bolt and I am finally convinced that a .136 bolt face depth bolt is needed for my build.
I go to my local gun shop and the owner tells me just use an ar-47 bolt. I bring up type 1 type 2 and he says just use the 7.62x39 bolt as that is all you need.
What say you?

Use the same bolt as your barrel I went with type 2 same as my barrel. And used a higher cost auto bolt that was shot peened . Lots of reports of Grendel bolts breaking. Also use a known mag that is known to function well in the Grendel. I bought my upper, bolt and mags from AR15parts.com been very happy with it.

One BCG is a toolcraft nickel. The other bolt carrier is titanium coated and I think I am going to put an Alexander hard use bolt in it.
My mags are from Alexander Arms.

I think that Young Mfg. makes the best beefed up Grendel bolt, but AR Performance & Alexander also make good Grendel bolts. Young Mfg. Grendel BoltMM

Outright bolt failure due a weak / bad bolt or some other contributing issue?
That's pretty surprising...............Young make good stuff.
Not familiar with Grendel.com.............have you used much of their stuff?

It is a group buy on the forums at 65grendel.com.
This is a comment from the group buy thread "By now you're familiar with Millennium Manufacturing's top-shelf, dedicated 6.5 Grendel bolts made to the same specifications as Alexander Arms' original 0.136" boltface-depth bolts and using 9310 steel treated with QPQ nitriding. For our forum group buys, MM laser imprints the Grendel "Monster" skull logo on the bolt."

The simple answer is that you have to use the bolt that matches your barrel. If your barrel was chambered for a .125" depth bolt, using a .136" bolt will end up with .011" extra headspace. If the combination is the other way around, the bolt won't lock closed on a loaded round. They are not interchangeable. As for the durability, it's really more about the quality of the bolt than which face depth it has. And I seriously doubt a Young bolt "made" a Grendel kaboom.
