We have the foundation and sub-floor in place for our camp. 24x32. I plan to put up four 8' 2x6 walls and the roof hopefully this summer. 4/12 24' trusses are going to run me around $130 a piece if I remember correctly. This has led me to using rafters which would allow more interior wall space on the gable wall for all of our spike horn trophies! Because of the energy code requiring R39 it looks like I will have to go with 2x12 Rafters.

So, my question is, how would you go about placing the collar ties? I would like to place them in the upper 1/3. There will be one wall that spans the width of the building about 12' from one side. I am thinking if I supplement this with another beam (round cedar) approximately 12' from the other end that should minimize any push out from the rafters due to the high collar ties.

Collar ties are generally worthless. I wouldn't sweat it.

order vaulted trusses and be done with it........faster, probably the same price as stick frame, no issues with insulation, a lot less labor...

Use a microlam for ridge beam. No collar ties needed. Microlam will have to be sized and or doubled.
Probably need a post in center to cut down span.

A 14' 2x12 is $18.80 each, thats $37.60 per span, I don't think I can even get in the ballpark with any type of truss. I did not price out vaulted trusses but I can not believe they are that cheap given a standard 4/12 is $130.

don't forget the price of the ridge beam that has to span 32 feet.......are you paying anyone to help you? if so faster with trusses, less labor, less money.

don't take this the wrong way......but if you are asking how to build it, do you know how to frame the roof ? with trusses no figuring out anything almost......bob

What are you doing with the overhang and soffit?

Truss....frees up the whole floor ..no posts...nothing...

Going to be hard to get a good r-value and air space running 2x12's,spend the money-go with trusses.
Labor will be a breeze.

Build your own trusses using 1/2" plywood gussets if your building code allows it. That's what I did. Build one on the subfloor in the middle of the 32' span and then nail blocks of scrap 2X4 at the critical points. Take it apart and use each piece as a template for cutting the remaining truss parts.Assemble by fitting in your guide blocks and nail (roofing nails) together with the gussets. Turn over and nail gussets on other side. One down and repeat as necessary.

Real gussets are less than a buck so that's an option too.

A vaulted truss on the ceiling will be at 1-12. Hardly 'vaulted'.....

A properly sized ridge will eliminate any push out.....

Home-built trusses have to be engineered here......

true.....the ridge might be bigger than what a person would guess it to be, since it needs to span 32 feet and factor in the snow load.....bob
