I really can't understand why he's still sucking air.

I also really don't understand what "message" we were/are trying to send him or anyone else..........lots of show, not much go without having lasting a really severe impact on anything affecting the situation there.

Exactly. Syrian Christians are huge supporters of Assad, because he protects them from radical Islamics.
