BWhoop...Please share in-depth your stalking abilities/tactics and what range you consider appropriate for you making an ethical shot. Please include your rifle, optics, and caliber...We all want to learn how to be better hunters. 😎

If you "question the ethics on a live animal" why are you posting in the long range forum? We really don't care about your opinion on ethics.

Ethics (more properly "ethical) s being prepared for the shot and making a one shot clean kill regardless of the distance.

So you think you can buy a 6.5 creedmoor and start popping shots off at elk at 800 yards -eh ??

smile sarcasm .

The PRC or 6.5 SAUM are interesting cartridges - they make a lot of sense .

I realize your statements are meant to be hyperbolic. My personal limit is 400 yards because I do not want any mistakes. If cover and wind doesn't permit this limitation, I back off and wait for another opportunity. I really like long range shooting as it tests your skills and that of your equipment. But I personally draw the line as stated. My rifles are generally Winchester M70's and Kimber Montanas with Leupold scopes and hand loaded ammo. I have witnessed enough "long-range" shooting in which the only limitation was how many rounds of ammo were available. But I realize that everyone here who subscribes to this method is a highly trained marksman.

Forgive me but I didn't realize this specific forum was the exclusive turf for highly trained snipers and marksmen. I enjoy the challenge of long range shooting, I use it to build confidence for short range hunting.
I enjoy the challenge of stalking closer than shooting at extreme distances. I'm sure I could never compete at your skill level.

My limitation is also based on cover, wind, ability to approach without getting busted and terrain...But, my personal, and consistent capabilities happen to be farther. This doesn’t make me a better hunter or a worse hunter. It makes me a prepared hunter.
This came from many years of shooting the same rifles at these distances, burning up 3 barrels over the years and using bullets that perform terminally at longer ranges...I don’t think this makes me a “Great Marksman.” It does make me a competent, responsible and ethical hunter at distances beyond 400 yards...😎

Beaver you sound far too reasonable. Though I do believe at a point one is more a marksmen than a hunter.

Although I can have fun shooting at targets 1400 yards regularly. I get no pleasure or sense of accomplishment shooting animals at long ranges.

I`ll rater use a diminutive 4x36 scope and get as close as possible to the animal. Thats hunting...

If you need to cull Elk, fine.. a few hundred yards away, add a suppressor and you can kill 3 or more in matter of seconds.

At what range does it go from hunting to “not hunting”?

Thats up to each person to decide. Free country and all.

I go hunting to experience nature as close as possible.
Shooting animals at 600 yards++ is target practice with a chance to hurt animals.

Again.. if culling, I have no problem doing whats needed.
