Pick the barrel you are most comfortable with. For me, if I were worried about more velocity, I would pick a different caliber. A 308 will be fine for elk.

This is the key to hunting elk.

It is almost not even worth considering. I've never even thought about the length of the barrels that my hunters bring. Usually I spend more time worrying if they'll be able to see the elk and shoot the elk without a bench rest and a week to get it done.

My younger teenage daughter has killed two elk with 20'' barrels on 308s.

I used to have a rem ltr in 308 with a 20'' tube. That thing was very accurate and easy to kill with, including elk.

I have a similar rifle, the XCR CT. Think LTR but stainless under a black coating and a 40X trigger. Like yours it is very accurate and it's easy to hold still. Not the lightest, but quite handy.

Agreed......it's a good compromise between handling and muzzle blast.

Good news....the Sako 85 comes with a 22" barrel.

I was thinking about the sak o a7 roughtech 308 but it has a 24.4 inch barrel. Do you know if the sak o a7 has a threaded barrel? And also I can only find the a7 with a black stock but I wanted the tan. Do you recommend any other 308 with a 22 inch barrel under 7 pounds? I was looking at the Browning x bolt speed, the Remington American Wilderness and the winchester extreme weather. Any help would be great

With elk in the mix, to me, the 7mm Rem Mag (or Weatherby) fits this description.

But I recently started taking a long hard look at the 257 Weatherby, and it seems like a near-perfect 400 yard point-and-shoot rifle, that could easily stretch to 600 yards. 270-like recoil. Only issue is it is expensive to shoot.

I was looking for one, but ended up finding a 26 Nosler. Faster, flatter, more recoil, more expensive to shoot, but I had to bite anyway.

Edited to add: . . . but a 6.5 Creedmoor is a whole lot more practical.

22” for sure; carrying a 26” tubed rifle can be annoying if going through cover.
