Is there any product that really keeps them of you? Short of being in a swimming pool.

Yup, awesome stuff. Two days sitting in the weeds so far and not a single tick. Their other DEET-free stuff is great too. Won't melt your sunglasses.

Permanone sprayed on your clothes. Ticks and chiggers are really bad here in some places. Permanone is the best thing I have used. I think it is a Permethrin product.I bought it at a farm store. You spray it on clothes before you put them on and let it dry. It is supposed to last through a few washings.

I buy it like this at TSC. And mix it in one of these from HomeDepot. The spray bottles at TSC suck.

been using it for years and never get a tick on me. if i don't use it, guaranteed ticks. i just finished a dose of anti-bios from my last tick bite. they're so bad around here that i debate buying one of those lightweight dickies coveralls and spraying them and leaving them on the porch for my forays into the woods. fuggen ticks around here the past 10 years are unreal.

Permethrin, permanone, pyrethrins, and the like are for clothes only, don't put on your skin. They are insecticides - and work very well. You can also buy some clothes that are pretreated with permethrin, when done properly it can last for years.
If you don't like DEET products try a picaridin based repellant that you can apply to skin or clothes. The version I've been able to buy at local stores is made by Sawyer. And it won't melt your fishing pole, monofilament, watch crystal, sunglasses, plastic tackle boxes, cheap rainsuits, paint, rubber hangun grips, some synthetic rifle stock finishes, truck steering wheel, .... I've been testing what deet melts for decades!
But DEET repellants still work too, easier to find than picaridin. Just be careful what you get it on

I use Sawyer, it plain works...but had Lyme disease 4 times before I smartened up.

what do you do about your dogs to keep them off them? When the flies get aggressive, I’ll spray a small towel or rag with the permethrin solution in my Zep spray bottle and wipe the dog down. For ticks, I had used frontline, but I’ve switched to the Seresto collar. This may discourage flies as well, but I haven’t enough experience yet to know.

I hear collars are the way to go for dogs, my buddy hunts Brittany's hard and that's what he uses...and we're in tick country.

It’s my understanding that skin contact with permethrin poses no serious health risk to most mammals and birds. On the other hand, permethrin is dangerously toxic to cats, fish and amphibians. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK231572/Ultimately, who really knows. For decades we were assured that Roundup was perfectly harmless to everything but weeds. Now, maybe not.

Never seen that before. We get ticks bad from mid April (most years, without snow) until June and then they taper off.

Treat your clothing with permethrin and use a good DEET insect repellent.

Picaridin; that's the stuff I couldn't remember the name of! Great stuff. Not only doesn't eat plastic, but it's much more pleasant on your skin.
Don't waste your money on what they sell in the store. Amazon has the good stuff that's much stronger.
