I found one and plan on bringing it home.

I know the 7mm Express became the 280 Remington. I'm not sure what twist they used back then?

I'd really like to stabilize the 180 ELDx or 175 ELD-X, but have a few hundred 162 ELD-X stashed away, and those are great, as well.

The 280 Remington became the 7mm Express which went back to being the 280 Remington. To spice it up there were a few rifles marked 7mm06 which made it out the door.

What are you hunting, why such a heavy bullet? I shoit 140’s in my 7mm 08, 7 mags, and 7mm ultra mags. They kill cshit out of deer, pigs and Aoudads. Just curious.

I've been shooting 160gr NPs in a couple of .270s of late, just because. Got a bunch of 150s too that I may never get into, but they were on sale!

I have one stamped 7mm express a very nice BDL, debating on selling it for something I wouldn't care to rough up. The guy I picked it up from had some 139 hornadys loaded up for it. He said it didn't shoot the heavier bullets well and it didn't like to be loaded hot.

That has been my experience with the Remington 700 280's. They either shoot well or they don't. Same with velocities. Does not seem to be any middle of the road.

I had one which I bought new and foolishly sold. It would shoot 139 hornadys at 2950, 150 gr corlocks or winchester power points also at 2950 and 175 gr winchester power points at 2650 all into the same 1 1/2 inch group at 200 yards. It also shot the 162 gr hornadys at 2875 although not into the same group. I sold that gun to buy a somewhat lighter kicking gun for my 14 year old son.

I'd say you just negated your "need" for a Barret Fieldcraft in 7mm-08.

Good friend of mine had one. Box read 7mm express, rifle stamped 7mm-06. serial number on box and rifle the same.

Not hard to figure out twist rate. Put a cleaning rod with a brush on it in the bore almost to the bolt face. Flag the cleaning rod at the muzzle and then pull the rod out one full rotation of the flag and measure from the muzzle to the flag. You now know what your twist rate is, 1 in whatever the measurement is. Nice rifle, nice caliber. Good luck with it!

Bought one of the Ruger Hawkeye All Weather .280 rifles several years back. Bought it to replace a tack-driving .280 Ruger #1 that I sold because it was just too nice to hunt with. The All Weather's 22" barrel pushes 140g bullets over 2940fps with excellent accuracy using H4831SC.

Get it and see if it shoots. A 160 in a 280 will do everything sans big pissed off bears. A good 7mm 160 at around 2750-2800 is as good as it gets. I have both a 280 Rem(Dads old gun) and a 280AI that I built. The 280 SAAMI likes 145 gr Speer BTSP with a full charge of IMR 4831 and CCI 200's. Bug hole groups all day. It's a one and done gun. What the 270 and 30-'06 should have been.
