I know this has been discussed previously. Unfortunately, cannot find a link. What is the minimum diameter increase to do a clean rebore ? Have a .223" barrel that I wold like to have bored out to 6mm, 6.5mm, or 7mm. Will call JES on Monday. Just curious...

Add to that whether a barrel has iron sight screw holes to deal with! JES will know for sure. Good luck to you, hope you get at least 6mm out of it!

I was told two calibers. So, a .243 barrel can be done in 6.5mm but not .257". But definitely check with whomever you plan to have do the work.

They usually say at least 0.007" over the current bore size.

I was under the impression JES reboring had a 338 minimum, as he didn’t have the tooling for smaller?

Go the other direction, i.e., how much barrel wall at the muzzle do you have after the reboring? I think JES says he needs .100" on each side but others say .125". (So, if you're going from 30-06 to 35 Whelen, the suggestion is you need to have a muzzle barrel OD of .558" to .608".)

The candidate barrel is 0.550" at the muzzle. Using the 0.250" minimum remainder rule of thumb, could go up to 30 caliber. However, really just want a 6mm or 6.5mm bore diameter to accommodate a .243 Win, or 6.5x55 Swede. Appreciate the input folks...

JES is the only one, I know of, that is cost effective. He starts at 338 and larger bore size. Others will go 6 or 6.5, but it is quite spendy. Unless this is a drillings or other rifle barrel with many difficult exterior cuts, a new barrel will be cheaper.

Originally, I was planning to just rebarrel (have barrel blank in hand...). However, rifle has an octagonal barrel. Once I received the rifle, the stock was much nicer than the pictures showed. And I liked the feel of the stock. Hence rebore vs rebarrel. As I posted elsewhere, Jess at JES has a good rep and was very cordial and helpful on the phone. However, only has tooling for .338" bore and up. Voice mail for Classic Barrel (Dan Pederson?) indicated that they had a shop full and were not taking any new work at the moment. Appreciated the candor. Eventually spoke with Wayne York at Oregunsmithing. Also very cordial, very easy to talk with. Currently three to four month lead time, so, the barreled action is headed his way.

Given the my first impression / interaction with each of the businesses, I would not have any concern working with any of them in the future. All seem to be good folks.

Try Randy Selby in Cody, WY. He does some smallbore reboring if memory serves me well ( it may not, but I'm "pretty sure")pard...:)

Appreciate the heads up. Mr. Selby's name did not come up when I first started searching. However, will keep him in mind for future needs.

My pops recently bought a CZ mini in .223 with great wood with the express intent to rebarrel to 25-45 Sharps. I mentioned reboring and that Wayne York was only 3 hours away door to door. Rifle came back about 3 weeks ago and shoots everything stupid well. Only hiccup was the factory cz .223 mags have a shoulder built in to keep rounds back in the mags, a pair of cz mags for 300 BO work fine so far.

Ended up with a neat little fly weight truck rifle for deer as WA requires .243 bullet diameter for big game.

Appreciate the feedback. Everything that I have heard about Mr. York's work has been positive. Going from .22-250 to 6.5x55 on a Mauser action. So, not expecting any significant issues with the magazine.
