I prefer a canoe, as more practical. I prefer the versatility of being able to pack in and pack out with gear and venison by water. Done it a few times. One canoe hunting trip had 4 of us (2 adults, &2 young men), all our gear, and 2 deer as we came back out.
Big Plus One!
Same here. The wife and I spend alot of time in my 14' Radisson Sportspal. At 41 lbs. it's easy to load/unload onto our SUV and it has plenty of room for coolers, tackle boxes, fishing poles etc..
Is an Old Town Vapor 10 a good-enough middle-class starter kayak?
yes. i got mine for 399. you can get the regular vapor for 299. difference is color and rod holders and anchor in the angler. it is a great river kayak. very stable and comfortable and tracks well.

rem141r,
I'm looking at the Old Town Vapor angler on the Academy site that Sock Puppet posted. All in all it has good reviews except almost everyone said the drain plug is in a really bad spot. The reviews are a couple of years old though so I'm curious if that is still the case?

There sure are a lot of America haters that want to live here...

I had my Old Town Vapor 10 out on the river today. Very comfortable seat, large opening, molded-in paddle holder and easy to adjust seat and foot rests. I found mine on craigslist for $250 2 years ago and it was only 1 year old. It has the rear hatch cover and tie downs on the front. I bought a new Vapor 10 about a month ago for $299. It was last year's color (like I give a hoot about the color). Compared to the cheaper ones I've paddled, the Old Town is a much nicer kayak. About the drain plug, yes, it's still in an odd location. Near the top behind your left shoulder. I think the idea is you will store it on it's side with the drain open. That's what I do anyway.

Wag more, bark less.

Travis, it's a Boreal Design Baffin P2. It's a modern Greenland style in plastic (I don't buy composite boats). Only have a few hours seat time so far. Taking it out again today.

Ever since Roundoak started this thread, it re-ignited my thought I should get me a fishing yak. After too many hours of research, and an extra push from Cabelas with a 10% off day, I ordered this one Thursday:

Looks bad ass. Wish I kept my boats. I ended up having room for them.

I never enjoyed fishing from the kayak. Just too limited with regards to space, and I have issues trying to turn and reach stuff behind me. I probably paddle more than most folks though. I enjoy paddle camping and day trips. In Florida there are a lot of perfect kayak rivers. In this picture, I'm on the Kissimmee River near Yehaw Junction. The kayak is a 10 year old Wilderness Systems Tarpon 140. As fine a kayak as you can find.
