There is a local discount grocer here in Loveland, Co run by the Mennonites called Esh's. Esh'sThere is NO REASON for anyone in Loveland to go hungry. They frequently have bacon for $2 a pound. Name brand food for 1/10th the cost of retail. But I go for the chicken. The local Wal-mart flash freezes their whole, raw rotisserie chickens when they hit the sell by date, if they have not yet been cooked. Esh's sells them by the case: $9.99 for 8 whole pre-seasoned Tyson chickens. These things are huge. This weekend they had some cases, so I bought one. The chickens were a hair smaller than usual, so they packed in some extras. A baker's dozen for $9.99. Half of them I butcher down, wings, thighs, drums, fillet the breasts off. The other half I freeze whole for grilling.

Starting to make the price of wild game seem reasonable.

Not a cheap cut, but does anyone else remember Club Steaks?

Not a cheap cut, but does anyone else remember Club Steaks? Isn’t that just the strip of a Tbone with bone attached?

Yeah, all the cuts that used to be cheap because they needed special cooking to make them good are now priced like fancy cuts. Veal shanks used to be pretty cheap, for example, because they are practically inedible unless you cook them low and slow for hours.

Pork is cheap around here, I fed the whole crew at the shop pulled pork a while back for $6. Of course all I bought was buns and sauce since I shot the pork in the barditch.
Seriously though, pork is a bargain in this part of the world. Our little grocery store routinely has boneless chops for $1.50lb, good meaty ribs for $1lb, and whole loins often marked down to $.79lb. We don’t buy any beef aside from a small amount of burger, it’s too expensive and we have a freezer full of deer. We buy 5lb bags of chicken breasts when they go on sale for $4 a bag, usually every other month or so they have them on sale.

TheKid,
Here in South TX, HEB Supermarkets routinely have 10# of large chicken leg quarters for 4.79 per bag. = I buy 1-3 bags, BBQ all of them & the freeze them individually to thaw out/reheat for dinners, as needed. = We had some last night for Supper, with creamed corn, boiled cabbage & cornbread. = YUMMY, imo..
yours, tex

Travis a lot of barges leaves mobile with frozen/iced chicken for ports unknown, perhaps havana? protein is protein, then there's fat, bones, gristle, etc. humans love meat, even the chinese will pay.

I'm convinced that people no longer know how to cook cheap cuts and/or can't be bothered, it takes some time and planning. Witness those delivered meal kit abominations. So grind them up.

When trying to figure out that night's dinner menu, I'll hit the grocer and look for 50%-off expiring cuts. Works great and it's kind of fun not knowing what'll be for dinner that night. Good way to try out new recipes.

I think Hipsters are the culprits.......everything they touch becomes overpriced and turns to chit due to adding some crap that doesn't belong in the product....Honey in Whisky and or Oranges in Beer are prime examples. And don't get me started on what the man bun wearing bastards have done to pipe tobacco.
