My friend recently bought me an older .220 Swift.

I have been getting the copper out of it for several days now.

Soak for several hours and the patch comes out DARK blue every time. The fellow that sold the rifle said he thought something was wrong with the scope.....might have something to do with all the copper in the barrel.

The Hodgdon site does not list an Enduron powder for the Swift. I dont blame them......pretty dead round.

Just wondering if anyone has a good load with one of the newer anti copper powders.

I am sure its a slow twist, so 55 is probably my limit.

Thanks

I can’t give you an answer with the Enduron powders, so if you are only interested in those, please disregard.

Alliant Powder’s data for 2000-MR, 55 grain bullets, in the 220 Swift looks pretty shiny. I plan to try it out in a slow twist 22-250 AI soon.

It does seem to be a hard round to find data for with new powders.

This article has a load with 55 gr bullet, Viht N140. I think all the Viht powders have an anti-coppering agent.

The Speer #15 manual has plenty of data with the new powders.

Reloder 16 has a decoppering agent and I found it to make tiny groups with Speer's max load of 43.5 gn but the velocity spread was around 100 fps for five-shot groups.
Backing off to 43 gn and switching to Fed. 215 primers brought the velocity spread down to under 40 fps.
43.0 gn fills the case half-way up the neck so a long-tubed funnel helps.
This load was used with 50 & 55 gn Ballistic Tips and 52 gn Sierras. Five-shot groups were less than .35" center-to-center and would have been better if I had been shooting better.
I have tried a lot of Swift loads over the decades and this is so good that I am going to quit experimenting.

Cheers,
Walt

P.S. I did not try IMR 4166 because it seems to be a little faster-burning than IMR 4064 an seems unlikely to produce top velocity. IMR 4451 was good at slightly lower charges than R16 but did not produce any groups smaller than about .6", which still a'int bad.

If you are looking for copper defouling agent, there is CFE223 data for the 22.250
in the last Hornady Annual Manual I picked up a couple of years ago....

its burn rate is close to H 380 it seems and there is a lot of H 380 data for the Swift out there.

use either, start lower than max and work up...

should find something in there the old Gal likes...

I have found in my swift that nothing works better than W760/H414, it burns so dirty that it keeps the copper fouling down (-:

Jim, the Hodgdon Annual Manual has a data section on the Swift with all the new powders. pm me if you want me to get a scan of it and send it your way.

Jim,

Hodgdon's on-line data is the same as in their Annual Manual, and lists Enduron IMR4451 in the Swift for bullet weights from 55 grains and up. I suspect IMR4166 would work great with lighter bulllets, but while the data doesn't list it for the Swift, it does for the .22-250, and that data would also be safe to use in the Swift.
