I drew a early rifle season bull tag in NE Nevada! I’ve hunted the edge Jarbidge Wilderness for cow elk before and know there are some in the wilderness. Is there anyone on the forum who knowns there area? I’m curious about units 73 and 74, but also 72. I’m not afraid to pack in, but only have 6 days to hunt and want to make it count for this once in a lifetime tag.

Not real familiar with that area but it can get pretty crowded during any hunt and packing in would be your best bet. Being packed in is better but you won't be alone even then. There are some packers who will do drop camps for a reasonable amount but they will probably book up fast. Hate to be a negative Nancy, but 6 days which might include packing out a lot of meat is gonna be a gamble.

Congrats on your tag, kinda glad I can't draw another elk tag for 7 yrs, last years tag pegged my fun meter.

I went with a buddy that had a tag. We followed a line of trucks up to the north edge of the Jarbridge wilderness and decided to turn around and head elsewhere. We went south. Lots of guys on that unit at that time.

Pard hunted that tag a few years back. He packed in to get away from the traffic/pressure (which is high) along the wilderness border and trailheads. Had the best elk hunt of his life he said.

Thanks for the pointers. I plan on packing in if I hunt 72. I know the area gets lots of pressure, which is my primary concern. I was hoping maybe units 73 and 74 would have less hunting pressure, but I don’t know much about them.
