At one time the 760 was the Pa woods rifle and family and friends used them. They did seem to rattle some, but it didn’t keep them from killing Deer every year. Either still hunting on drives or posted up. The safety never seemed to be an issue either. For the most part I thought they were unbalanced and heavy when scoped.

Four or five years ago a Bud was still using one in .30-06, and then he picked up my Kimber Montana and a light came on. He had a Rem .243 Model 7 in the closet he had bought for his Son when he started hunting. He uses it now and still kills a Deer every year. Says he would never go back to the 760.

Addition: Will add that a Country Cousin, on a drive, put 7 Deer down in short order with a .270W 760 and a clip change. That was a long time ago long and interesting evening. But then he had an Uncle that did the same with a Model 70.

They are all gone and times have changed, but give them a BAR and it wouldn’t have been fair.

You're right. The current MC comb is too high. The straight comb is much better for a low mounted scope.

My favorite 760 stock style, in terms of stock ergs, is the BDL with the raised cheek-piece monte carlo and ugly basket-weave checkering. I have a 2-7x33 on one and a 3-9x40 on another that are attached via a Weaver #62 base and low Warne QR Maxima rings. the 40mm objective on the 3-9x40 comes close to the barrel, but doesn't touch it.

That said, the 760 that I hunt elk in the timber with has a set of Remington's monte carlo plastic on it.

You’re assuming any actual thought.

Honestly, for my vision of Maine style hunting,
I would save the $$$ and buy a used 30-06 pump of either model.
Prefer the 760, but only because I have one that has been accurate,
functions reliably, and is dependable. Guarantee, it is still zeroed in the basement,
haven't touched the screws in several years. My bolts aren't all that good.

But, it doesn't get hunted. As Battle said, it's heavy, and it rattles a bit.

Have to go with the pump on this one. I'm not a huge fan of the BLR.

elelbean,

As many here KNOW, I'm the "friendly neighborhood 760 addict", as I own 8 of them in .244REM through 9.3x62mm Mauser. - Nonetheless, my sincere advice is a 1950s or 1960s Model 760 in .30-06 or .308WCF & fitted with a LOW-power fixed scope, as an all-around rifle/carbine for the Western Hemisphere.
(Most of my 760s wear 2.5 or 3X Leopold or Redfield scopes. One wears a 6X scope by Waffen-Bennewitz, that I bought 4 decades ago in BRD. = I do NOT trust ANY variable-power scope to NOT get "out of whack", especially if it gets bumped or dropped.)

yours, tex

NOT to mention OFF topic. The 99 was NOT among the options.

Talk about stuck in the past ! The 7600 & M Six have several improvements over the 760. I know, I've had BOTH.

I could never warm up to the BLR, in levers. I like the Win 94, the 444 timber carbine especially. The savage 99 F (featherweight) and of course either the 760 or 7600. All have followed me to Maine but the rem pumps have been the only ones to actually score on the tough hunting up there north. If I had to pick though it would be the pumps, seems to be the perfect gun for up there.

As a matter of fact if you're in the market for a 7600 carbine, PM me, had one up for sale here that I still have. May go to GB soon.

I'd go with the 7600 carbine. I used to have a 760 Carbine. Selling it was one of my dumbest moves.

I would pick a 760 or a 7600 that was made before 2009.

jwall,

I too have owned BOTH the 760 & 7600 & I still prefer the old-school 760 to the newer model. - Also, I currently own a pair of 7615P carbines & like those too.

You are welcome to disagree. = My grandfather used to say, "Differing personal opinions is what causes horseraces."

Agreed....mine are older.

I’ve been trying to bring myself to cut my Whelen to 19”(ish). This will be the year! 😀

I prefer the carbines.

I had one in ‘06 and don’t remember why it left the safe. Someone must have needed it more, I guess. Currently I’m down to a .35 Remington carbine that, if truth be told, is my favorite rifle in the stable. I’ve had the Whelen for a while, just haven’t got around to lopping it off.

BLR is a nice piece however I would pick the Remington pump in any caliber👍
I’m partial to the 7600. I have a 35 Whelen Carbine and a 308 Winchester cut to 20”.
Pick the one that fits and feels best. Then go out and have fun!
