My neighbor called saying she saw a fox carrying a kit and being followed by another kit out back. I went out and found a dead fox lying in the middle of the gravel drive to my barn. Oddly, two live foxes were off to the right perched on a pile of lumber, one looked a bit mangy and blind in one eye, the other looked to be a juvenile.

I'd been out there an hour earlier. The dead fox wasn't yet in rigor. It looked to be in good health. I can't figure what killed it.

The dead one had rabies - you are now infected and will die soon.

I found a dead one out back this year too. We seem to have a litter of them around every year. They become quite tame, but with the Catahoula around now I hardly ever see one.

The foxes come and go around our place, seems to depend on the current coyote population at any given time. Right now we are seeing reds regularly in our yard, drive and private road, no coyotes. I would gues that as the fawns are being dropped everywhere[saw one born this week at house] the yotes will show back up and foxes will disappear into the woods and thickets.

More foxes equal less mice and the mice are the intermediate host for Lyme disease. The coyotes kill foxes and wolves kill coyotes. Coyotes and wolves are not nearly the mousers that foxes are.

Fox are cool critters and fun to watch. They can be hell on birds, quail, if we had any anyomre, the ants have them gone. Turkeys. Same thing, ants have them gone.

I enjoy watching the fox more than the coyotes, but coyotes can be a blast to watch at times too.

Fox hides bring money, coyotes don't.

Have to keep all in check from time to time.
