I recently moved an uncle who asked if i wanted to buy any of his guns. I purchased this 99F and then started doing some research on it. I paid 150.00 for it and put my own scope on it. From what I see this gun may be fairly valuable I'm curious what it may be worth. It is super clean with no rust and so scratches. My Uncle said he bought it prob. in the 60's he hunted maybe 5 times with it. the serial # appears to be 943638 and its a 99F it has a clip counter on it as well. Any Idea of its possible value. trying to figure out how to get the pics on here but new here and not exactly comp savy. thx. s_wndyyahoo.com

Welcome!

Sounds like you got a really nice gun at a really great price! A pre-mil serial numbered "F" is one of the finest examples of a lever action gun.

Value? If your uncle and you shared great times together, the gun would be priceless in my eyes... smile

Now if it's a 243, 358 or even a 250-3000 some of the boys round here may be PMing ya real fast with concrete offers! smile smile smile

Its a 308 and shoots great. Not a gun collector myself and figure that maybe I'd get some value from if it now if I wanted the Marlin Not as if I'll be hunting and notice a differnece in shooting or miss because its the guns fault, lol. I've just read good things about the new Marlin and now I'm seeing the value of the savage from you guys so thx. I'm on the edge. Dave

Impingement,
Copy paste your posts here up on the Savage Collectors boards above.
FWIW, You might consider hanging on to the Savage M99.
Not any more of them being made and one in good original condition will not only increase in value, but they are excellent firearms in fit, finish function and accuracy.
Save up the money for a Marlin..:)Jim

The 59F was drilled for scope mounts. Scope don't hurt nuten'

I believe it was tapped and drilled in production so that shouldnt affect the value as the gun has not been altered at all and my uncle was original owner. Its funny as I'm 44 and I have never ever even heard of him hunting. Just glad i stumbled across it. I feel bad though i let a .35 remington leveraction go and told himbecause it wasnt tapped i didnt think it was worth anything at least not to me. Shows what I know. He sold it for 100.00 and it looked New. Dave

Lauren, I will have to take issue with your appraisal of the 35. If it was a Marlin 35 that was not drilled and tapped for scope mounts it would have been made no later than 1955. Marlins of that era are exceptionally smooth and have excellent fit and finish. I will put a 1950s Marlin up against a Savage 99 of the same vintage and I bet there would not be much difference in the level of craftsmanship. Just my two cents. Any any event, it was worth well over $100.

Despite my handle, there is no comparison between a Marlin and a Savage. Keep the 99 for several reasons :

1. The Savage 99 is the finest lever action rifle ever produced.

2. A family heirloom that could never be replaced.

3. Marlins are a dime a dozen and still being produced, what you have in your hands is the REAL DEAL.

But be forewarned, you got your first one for cheap, the 99 aint cheap anymore.

I got Marlins & I got Savage 99s , they each have their own place.I WOULD NEVER SELL A 99 to buy a Marlin. The Savage 99 has something no other levergun has CLASS.
