I switched back to H4895 after a decade of using Varget, because Varget was hard to get there for a while. I didn't notice that much of a difference, so I left it that way. I've been using H4895 for about 5 year now with 165 Hornady IL SP's.

My favorite is 4064. My deer load is 4064 and a Sierra 150 grain flat base. There are so many that work well that its hard to pick a bad one. I guess my top 4 would be:
1. 4064 2. Varget 3. 4895 4. BL-C2
RL-15 or 748 could be substituted anyplace in the above list.

Thanks River... interestingly, Alliant's website comes nowhere near the RL17 QL speed with the same barrel length and charge. Wonder what's up with that? However, of the powders I use, everything looks quite close. Cartridge : .308 Win. (SAAMI)
Bullet : .308, 165, Nosler Accubond 55602
Useable Case Capaci: 46.471 grain H2O = 3.017 cm³
Cartridge O.A.L. L6: 2.800 inch = 71.12 mm
Barrel Length : 24.0 inch = 609.6 mm

For whatever reason, except for my departed and much-lamented Kimber Longmaster, I've not had great success with 150s. Now I just buy 165s or Sierra 168 MKs. I get either BTs or lately, ABs from SPS, blems or overruns. My current rifle, a Hawkeye Predator, likes RL15 best so far, but CFE223 works too. I don't load it up much, as shots here tend to be close, and 41gr or so of RL15 puts big, burping, through and through holes in deer and makes tiny clusters in targets. Hard to go far wrong.
What fresh Hell is this?

CFE223 can produce some top velocities in a 308. It can also get real "sporty" when the temperature rises.

I also do not like CFE in the 308, it had marginal accuracy and burned really hot. My barrel would be so hot you couldn't touch it after only two or three shot. Did not like that.
I am currently using BIG GAME with standard #200 CCI primers and 165g Federal Trophy Bonded Tipped. They are running about 2850 from my 24.5" Sako.
I am working up some loads based on data from federal with PP 2000-MR which they claim will make 2900 in a 24" gun with 50.5g. I just like trying new loads myself so try some and use the one you like, they are all pretty good in the 308.

Thanks for all the info. I have some of most all powders mentioned above. Since my son is in North Dakota a powder like Varget being somewhat "temp in-sensitive" makes sense if it shoots well in my/his new rifle. Temps by him range from close to 100 in summer to 40 below in winter. I loaded him up some cartridges for his 7x57 Ruger using RE19 and they shot very well here in Illinois in summer, but by him in winter not so much.

Same thing I saw, top velocities but a little squirrely and inconsistent.

As I noted earlier, one rifle is an "example of one."
The .308 tends to be far more consistent in the results from handloads than 98% of other cartridges. But rifles are still individual machines, and all we can do is play the odds.

For the TAC fans, are you using magnum primers? It seems like the charge that would be under 150's might still be OK with a regular primer. Or, is it one of those things that only one's own rifle can decide? I've tried TAC in other cartridges, and still have a fair bit left, so I thought might give it a whirl in the .308. Mind you, this is purely academic. The rifle currently shoots thusly with Varget: FC

Folically_Challenged,
I'd add more powder. Even very consistent single-based powders often benefit from a little more pressure. This is hard to believe for hard-core 4895 users, but it's true.
Or I'd look at the rifle itself. Or shoot more groups in really calm conditions before coming to any conclusion.
