The musket is interesting to me

"We have succeeded in obtaining a limited quantity of revolutionary Flint Lock Muskets. These muskets have a 27 inch blued barrel and weigh 9 pounds, fitted with three steel bands and a steel ramrod.

They have been cleansed and refinished. It has been supposed that there were no more of these flint lock muskets to be had, but out Europan buy succeeded in finding a small lot of them in Belgium and has sent them to us.

This revolutionary Musket is not only a good antique bit it can also be used as a shotgun…..

Our special price for this is $2.65"

Interesting, we need to remember, the greenback dollar was a lot harder to come by back then.

Thanks for sharing. My Grandfather told me that my Great Grandfather bought a shotgun from the Sears catalog that was given to him when his dad passed. When my Grandfather passed he gave that gun to me and it is now in my safe. While it may still be worth $5.95, I will pass it to my grandchild with the knowledge that comes with it. The one I have looks exactly like the one pictured in the very first picture above, front sight included. Ha.

Yeah, though I think that one was a 32, mine is a 38 S&W.

Mine was also likely carried by some form of agent for the American Railway Express Agency

To All,

In 1902, my paternal Great-Grandfather was a Special Deputy US Marshal for The Indian Territory (and in OK from 1907 - WWI --- He passed away, at age 64YO, during the Spanish Flu pandemic in January 1919.). = To give you an idea of the TRUE value of REAL US dollars (those backed by GOLD & SILVER), my GGF was paid ONE dollar a day plus "reasonable & necessary expenses" as a SDUSM.

My guess is that you can still buy a NICE L.C. Smith DB for 27.75 in US gold coins.

yours, tex

Steelhead,

NICE historical piece.

I recently saw an Iver Johnson "Owl Head" revolver (in an old & "really beat-up" leather holster) at a gun-show, which was stamped on the back-strap: USRWMPO-CZ.
(I later found out that the marking is for: UNITED STATES RAILWAY MOBILE POST OFFICE - CANAL ZONE & that such handguns were carried by railroad postal clerks "on the job".)

Wishing that I had bought it

yours, tex.

Ultra cool and thanks for posting. I have reprints of old Stoeger Arms catalogs from 1932 & 1940 and it's very interesting to peruse them. Even in 1940 the prices really hadn't gone up much since the 1932 rates. But when you consider the average wages back then you see that some of that stuff was expensive even back then.

I love it! An 8 gauge goose gun, delivered to your door for $16.
Check out the old muzzleloaders, a flintlock long rifle for $3 and a flintlock pistol for 2 bucks. I could not read the writing well enough but flintlocks had been obsolete for 75 years. These must have been military surplus from the War of 1812, or something.

That is fascinating to read that catalog.

Fantastic post. Thanks for posting.

Back then you could buy almost anything mail-ordered from Sears, even a house. Too bad they missed the Internet revolution. Makes me wonder what we're missing now.

IndyCA35,

IF you want a SEARS house in original, "restorable" or better condition, there are MANY of them on the east side of San Antonio. - MOST were built by the railroads to house their workers & supervisors. Some of the SEARS (& MONTGOMERY WARD) houses have NEVER been "updated" & would be an EASY restoration.
(There are TWO of the Sears houses for sale within a mile of where I am sitting & one is still "original" though "run down".)

Frankly, I would be in the market for one of the "kit-houses", in original condition, except that I'm working on buying a 2BR/1BA about 1,000SF CRAFTSMAN COTTAGE (circa 1910) that was never "remuddled". It still has all the "built-ins", kitchen cabinets & original BR fixtures intact.
The house is believed to be a "California Bungalow" design of David Owen Dryden, who was then a "well-regarded architect" in Pasadena, CA.
(The owner & I haven't "come to a price", YET.)

yours, tex.

simonkenton7,

Montgomery Ward once (before WWI) sold a single-barrel TWO-gauge shotgun (with 40" tube), that reportedly weighed about 6-7 pounds. = I don't even want to think about what firing that "small-bore cannon" would be like from the shoulder.

yours, tex

Interesting rifle chamebrings- some I never heard of.

I see the .303 advertised as 2000fps but the USA Army 30 cal flew at 2400. MAGA!
