Pumps still best semi autos for reliability and required maintenance. For his own reasons he was willing to accept the compromise.

Addition: Now Beretta, Benelli and the Winchester SX3 or SX4 are big on reliability and minimial required maintenance, and one needs to give them credit for it. The 1100 is a great pointing shotgun although the 12's are on the heavy side for field use.The butt stock has always been too thin for myself, but others are fine with it. When it comes to reliability and maintenance the Rem 1100 has been passed by. Which is why one only rarely sees them being used in heavy use competition. They mostly, out of the box, point better than the others, but they don't work as well or hold up to heavy use along with requiring much more routine maintenance.
