In conversations with my mom this morning, turns out my dad was a keen hunter as a kid, said he said he was a good shot and that's where he learned.

Never mentioned it at all to me, even when I went hunting myself. Didn't stop me from buying a rifle at 16, never spoke against guns, but never offered to take me hunting either.

I did know that for him Okinawa changed everything. He went there as a Private but left with the rank of Staff Sergeant, the youngest in the 'Corps at the time, battlefield promotions.

I never even saw him pick up a gun, much less shoot one. I never realized how profoundly combat must have affected him until just now.

Nice! Got a couple of later model Savage 19's, still need to find a decent full stocked NRA 19. They pop up pretty frequently, just need to find one that the owner doesn't think is made of gold. For $400-$500 you should be able to get a really nice one.

Almost surely didn't buy the rifle new, it's probably 12+ years old by 1941.

i have one of those 19's in the pile, although i have not shot it. Long barrel on the thing. Suppose to be pretty accurate.

Birdwatcher, if you shop for one try to get the magazine along with it. They are hard to come by even though the Savage 23 series also uses them.

I had one also back in 1952 (age 12) and it was missing the clip magazine; so I used it as a single shot for hunting squirrels. I bought in an old pawn shop for under $10.00. If I remember right I sold it to a friend who used it to shoot anything he caught along his trapline. Usually a fox, raccoon, etc. I too, can not remember the make or model.

My best guess too, the safety especially.

This past weekend I won a 125 yard contest with the Savage 19 NRA - a 5 shot 3/4 inch group at that distance, wearing a 20x BSA scope on the old-style side mount. Yes, those old NRA training rifles had some good longish barrels. Apparently better than the newish CZs.

I bought this M19 NRA for 10 bucks at Rubinsteins in West Chester PA in 1961 (they had a bunch of them sitting on their butt plates in a barrel - take you pick for $10), and it was way older than me at the time. Military style wood all the way out almost to the muzzle. Of course, being a 23 year-old novice, I immediately removed the top wood and shortened and "streamlined" the bottom wood. Wish I had not done so. It has been a small game killing buddy ever since.

Found one similar a few years ago in Albuquerque (not the NRA training model- the sporter version) and. needless to say, it was not for $10. Yes, those unique little removable clips are hard to find - and a bit pricey.

Good advice, although I'm not sure about the sizing of the Savage 23 clip. I had a 23D in .22 Hornet and the clip setup was wider and longer then the .22LR (of course), but probably Savage also made the M23 in .22LR with the same clip as the M19. That .22 Hornet shot lights-out as well.

They made both the later 19-33 in both 22LR and in 22 Hornet, as well as the 23's. In fact, I think it was the same receiver/barrel just different stocks. Clips are interchangeable.

Here's a couple of the later style of 19's and a 23 on the bottom, all in 22LR. Just picked these up. Got a 19H and 23D in 22 Hornet as well. I'm kinda fond of them. Just haven't had any luck finding a really good buy on a NRA 19 yet.

Would there have been Carcano rifles around here before WWII? Wasn't this a WWII infantry rifle? (It said the picture was dated 1941)
