I’d rather a 7-08 and a 223 than a 260 and 308.....For compact rifles. Oh [bleep] yeah. Have 308's too but 7-08 ever day and twice on Sunday. .223's are like .22lr's. You should have 3-4 minimum. As far as compact, I think there's two or three in the safe over 20", and quite a few at it or less.

Of course you should do it. This is a hobby, man. Buy, shoot, sell and trade. It's just a gun, they'll make more. Agreed......Hb

My short barreled rifle is a lightweight compact slender and easy to carry 18.5” barreled lever 30-30 with a low power scope and more of a snap or pop than a crack. Probably not much good for really wide open spaces. But about the only rifle I’d want with that short or shorter barrel other than a pistol caliber or a 22 rimfire.

Color me confused. Other than in the title, I didn't see mention of a compact rifle. Yes, me too. PER 'compact rifles', I would NOT have a 16" or 18" bll deer rifle. I suspect the OP is talking Light Weight Rifles Why not a 16" or 18"? My 16.1" Ruger Scout is one of the handiest rifles I own and would have suffices for all but maybe 3 of the shots I've taken in the 35 years I've been hunting, And might have worked for at least 2 of those 3.

No, I'm not a Ruger bigot - just an unabashed fan of their revolvers, M77's and #1's.
A good .30-06 is a 99% solution.

Get what you want! Just never trade or sell a good shooter! You will be sorry, most of us know the story all too well. ... Have to admit I've sold a couple of great shooters. One (Model 700 in .308 Win) to help fund my first AR. The other (Ruger #1) because it was too nice to take elk hunting. Regrets? Not worth mentioning, as I'm very happy with the replacements.
