One of my primary protagonists in my next book is Spared Territory North President Catherine Ragland Smith. When forced into the fray, she grabs what is handy and helps defend her people with the hunting rifle of her youth. In honor of my heroine, I carried along a rifle much like hers to the NASA, Inc. range this morning. Much fun! Half-inch group at 50 yards with open sights... sweet!!

I have the same gun. It was my dads. Never had a scope and problably killed more deer in this area than any other. Took it out last year and killed a 4 by 4 ai about 175 yards for old time sake. Killed my first deer with it in about 1968. It was made in 1954. Ed k

Is the slide forend pretty smooth and tight to the rifle or does it rattle quite a bit?

I have the same rifle in 30-06, my grandfather bought it new, I don't think he ever killed a deer with it , however I have killed several, it too is very accurate but the recoil is harsh to say the least.

That's how most of them will shoot if the operator is up to it. Nice looking rifle!

Once a round is cycled into the chamber and the bolt is locked, the forearm moves very little.

If you google a little you can find the Remington numbers for date of manufacture. That's how I found out when my dads was built. Ed k

I checked the date code, and the various online tables indicated the rifle was manufactured in 1953, year two of production. Someone had stuck a 7400 magazine in the rifle. It would not even lock in place. I sold the magazine on one of these gun forums and found a proper 760 magazine on eBay. I imagine the original magazine was tossed out with some old dear departed sportsman’s other knick knacks (possibly loaded with four rounds of greening Peters CoreLokt softpoints).

dannycreasy,

I've never known EXACTLY why (I'm not a gunsmith.) but my 1953 & 1954 Model 760 rifles do NOT accept many of the magazines that the "experts" say that will fit the early rifles.
(My "extended magazines", that hold 10/15 rounds & DO fit my "early rifles" were made by POLICE EQUIPMENT COMPANY & sold by GEORGE F. CAKE COMPANY of Dallas, TX. Those are REALLY NICE quality magazines but NOT cheap to buy., I paid 50 bucks for my 15 round magazine.)
Note: Police Equipment Company reportedly made some 20 & 30 round magazines, in the pre-1960 era, but I've never seen any of those. - I have seen photos, so I presume that at least a FEW were made.

The post 1950s Model 760 rifles/carbines GENERALLY will accept ANY magazine that was produced by Remington & SOME "aftermarket" magazines..

yours, tex
