I feel the only time the short neck matters is when using cast lead bullets. Seating the base below the neck exposes the bullet lube to getting encrusted with powder granules which doesn't help either of the two. Then there's also the outside chance of the gas check falling off (if not firmly crimped into place) and laying in the powder. Whether that's an issue is open to debate, but it can't be a positive thing.

There's also the rhubarb about the short neck being more problematic when trying to attain load concentricity. Much more of a problem with cast bullets than with jacketed I fear. Lead bullets are far more sensitive to being started straight into the rifling than jacketed bullets are.

These are the main issues that have bugged we cast .300 shooters since forever. Bullet molds have been designed to ameliorate some of those issues, meh, I can't be bothered seeing as how I just don't shoot .300's much.

Its just short - and that may cause some challenges, but I don't see the controversy in it. It's just short.

I load and shoot Hornady's 155gr A-Max for long range silhouette and have a load using Speer's 165gr BTSP but haven't tried any of those yet. In theory the 155 should carry enough energy to knock over a ram....now all I have to do is hit one that isn't a swinging practice target to find out! Rifle is an Interarms Mark X that could be loaded to higher pressure than a 99 but I haven't done that yet.

Saturday at the range I gave the Sierra 150 gr SPBT a go. Shot them out of my 1940 T, and my 1938 R and was quite pleased with the results. Didn't piss around working up loads, just used my go-to standard Varget load that I've had luck with every 99 in 300 Savage that has crossed my path. Very confident M.O.-deer. Also, tried 165 gr Sierra SPBT in my 1936 Spiegel EG in 300 Savage. With a peep, shot 1 1/2 at 50 and 1 3/4 at 100 yards. Only shot one group at each range, cause other rifles were in the rotation. The soft point boat tails are perfectly acceptable from my perspective. I can now put to rest my mental delusion bout boat tails in the 99 300 savage. I said this in short on the OT muzzle post as well.
