I’ve wondered how many Model 99-375s Savage produced. Lacking any real numbers, I’ve attempted to estimate a reasonable range of how many were made and came up with an estimate of 800-1200. I’d like your feedback on the how I came up with this, and any recommendations you might have for improving on the estimate.

• I assumed between 20k-30k 99s were built in 1980, and that all Model 99-375 were made in 1980 (I think there might have been a handful made in 1981).
• I estimated an approximate production percentage split for each model based on gut feel and cross-checked it against observed counts of models in JB Boren’s price sheet xls.

First I looked at the 1967 and 1968 serial number observations and estimated that Savage made about 47k 99s in 1967 and roughly 27k in 1968.
• 1967 start roughly 1,113,000; ended roughly 1,160,000
• 1968 – 11mo of 99 SNs, 1 month mixed product serial numbers. Start roughly 1,160, 000 end: roughly 1,185,000 = 25,000 in 11 months, or about 27K grossed up for 12 months
• Given the market trend and increasing cost to produce, I assumed the range of 1980 model 99 production to be between 20k-30k.

Here is the table showing the assumed 1980 total 99 production, and estimated model percentage splits, and resultant model production counts.

Keith,

With that few made, I should have picked up the brush gun in 375 Win a few months ago at a LGS. It was 85-90%, original, and $800.

There are more 358 brush guns out there than 375s for sure.

I didn't even know that caliber was produced.

Not knowing anything and purely speculating, but I would assume production of 99's really slowed down as bolt actions took the world over.

Given the data that you have (don't have) I think you've made a pretty good guess. Thanks for taking the time.

I wonder how production of the 99-A in .375 compares to the 375-Brush Gun number?

.375 Win ammo has been in short supple for some time. Stairline made brass but it is currently out of stock. Graf and Sons stocks 200 gr by Precision Cartridge Co. Anyone know what brass they are using?

Ohio hunters have taken an interest in the .375Win now that straight wall rounds are now legal for deer hunting.

BERTRAM BRASS IN AUSTRALIA LISTS .375 WIN ON THEIR WEBSITE FOR $145/100.
