Interesting to find something that was a custom build for less than the cost of Zastava donor, today. Someone needs to snag that. I have too many projects in flight.

How is that conversion done? I've never seen one in person.

Still right port and bolt release on the left. Bolt handle moved to the left side. . Possibly cut the bolt and rotate the locking lugs such that they unlock clockwise, looking from rear. Hard to tell without close up pics of the bolt. Truly surprised that someone hasn't at least put a starting bid on it...

I can't figure out how that would work without changing the lug spaces in the front receiver ring.

The lefty Mauser mods I have seen good pictures of had a gear arrangement added so that rotating the bolt handle clockwise made the bolt body rotate counterclockwise. But that particular style of modification is not apparent in the pics on GB.

The lug recesses go all the way around the receiver so the ridge down the top of the bolt has to be milled off to allow the bolt to rotate backwards. I've had two Winchester 70s so converted. You are right that some have done the conversion with a tiny gear system, however I've seen more converted by just milling off the ridge, cutting and welding the back of the receiver to allow for left hand operation.

The one linked in the first post is converted that way. You can see the ridge is milled off in one of the pictures.

I'm seriously debating bidding on this one but I have several lefty rifles. I still have my old model 70, converted to left hand and rebored to 35 Whelen. In fact is took a bull moose for me this year. I also have a lefty 300 H&H so a 30-06 would be redundant. But that is one nice looking rifle.

Back in the day when I was a kid Roy Gradle made nice left hand conversions using a gear with the bolt. It's mentioned I think in this 1956 issue of Guns Magazine. The prices in this old magazine will make you cry. I takes a while to load. http://gunsmagazine.com/1956issues/G1256.pdf

I believe that Craig Boddington has had a few LH conversions over the years, maybe done just like this.

For me, at my age, while I am sorely tempted and it looks well done, some years back I discovered the Classic LH offerings of Winchester Model 70s and have pretty well filled all my needs.

Oh, I did jump on the Zastava LH sale a few years ago here, and ended up with a 9.3x62. Wish now that I'd gotten a .243 or something in that range too.

I don,t care for the LH conversions only have 2 eyes had a primer leak on a RH rifle about cost me my eye.

Not worth the risk IMHO, not a problem till it happens to you!

The Ackley isn't a conversion, it was made that way in Japan for him.

IIRC, one of about 50 LH Mauser actions imported by PO Ackley when he worked for EMDEKO..

That has to be the ugliest stock I have ever seen.

Haas and Van Zwoll say 50 LH were made.



Yeah, don't think Ackley did wood work and if he did I hope he didn't create this groovy chunk of ugly.

Odd looking comb for certain. Still, it looks like a nice piece and one that was well-used. I'm thinking it's from the late 60s or 70s.

Anyone familiar with that Calhoun Gun Shop?

There used to be a smith here in Canada that would cut two 98 actions in half off center, swap the ends, re-attach and make one long action and one short action. I'm not sure, but he probably did the left conversion as well.
