I have an 1894ss in 44mag that I want to mount a Burris Fastfire on. I was wondering what the best route to take would be. I heard the Fastfire mounts for the 336 and 1895s won’t work if you want to mount your optic on the back holes, which is kinda where I wanted it. Does anyone have any mounting recommendations? I do not want to put a rail on it, it puts the sight too high. If I need to mount it forward on the receiver I will, but I would really like to mount it in the rear. Any tips, or photos welcomed. I think with a Fastfire, the 44 magnum could be my new number one deer gun👍 Thanks, Steve.

Can you put a thin weaver base on it and mount it in that? I did a break action like that and it worked well.

Using the Burris 336 base you can mount a Fastfire in the rear two holes but it overhangs the back of the receiver a bit, maybe 1/2" or less IIRC. Not enough to keep from reaching the hammer but it does get in the way of your thumb. Never tried a hammer side extension such as would be used with a scope but that should work fine. I just mounted mine in the front two holes. The Fastfire does work great on a lever action carbine, sight height is about halfway between a peep and the lowest mounted scope. Not the best sight for super precise target work but very fast to use and perfect within your point blank range - just put the dot where you want to hit and fire.

I like the fastfire idea but thus far have been too cheap. I did buy a used on on the classifieds here that wasn't worth the price of shipping, but that's on me buying a used electronic sight I guess. I have XS peeps on both my 357 and 44 Marlins, and the XS scout rail with Tasco red dots. Not ideal, but the one has been on a half dozen different rifles over the years, never failed me yet. Worst case, you can use a knife blade to turn the screws and take them off and voila ain't no flies on the XS sights. I checked zero on the 44 yesterday with the dot, was in a 3 inch sticker from 7 yards back to 100. Works for me.
