thanks for your reply, and the image.
it looks like a handy, medium weight rig you've put together to meet your needs.
i was surprised, as i didn't know Winchester made that in a .222, but when i think about it, back in the mid 1970's the .222 was still a very popular cartridge.
while i'm probably in the minority here, i still like that cartridge more than the .223--nostalgia, for one.
i enjoy your posts on the coyote hunting you're doing...
ingwe, that is a very nice rig. i'm surprised that your wife hasn't claimed that one for herself...

I have a couple buddies who have .222's in their arsenal and I've hunted with several other guys who had them and every one I've ever encountered was exceptionally accurate. Max range seems to be a bit shorter than the .223 based cartridges, but use of the SX and Blitz bullets seems to keep them effective, especially on pelts you want to keep. I lusted after my buddie's Sako .222 for years, but it was clear he was never going to be interested in selling it. His Martini was a thing of beauty and shot as well as the Sako or a bit better. All in all, though these days with the bullets and excellent brass available along with the cheap prices on factory 223 rifles, that is the route I would go unless you get a killer deal on the 222..

My wife grew up with a Rem 722 in .257 Roberts, which she still uses. I got a deal on a 722 in .222 and bought it for her...so she leaves mine alone!

I have been using a Remington mod 600 in 222 for the past 13 or so years to coyote hunt. Generally, I use 50 grain VMAX bullets. I will have to try some of the HPs mentioned here. As for powders, I like Benchmark. Never tried 4198.
I just put together an AR-15 type rifle to try for coyote hunting this year. Will be the first year I used something else- just an experiment. As for fur damage, I think an 22 CF is going to have a tough time not exited on broadside shots. I wish Barnes still made their blue meanies as they were the most easily expanded bullet I have ever shot!

Ingwe, you won the lottery to have both of those very desirable rigs! I'm even more envious now, knowing you scored on a Rem 722 in .222--incredible. And so self-less, to immediately give it to your wife. I've looked for a minty one for years, and have had no luck... Meanwhile, I did buy this one many years ago. Sako high comb .222 Rem. with straight six Leupold. Really like it--very accurate, but have never used this one on a coyote hunting venture though...

Greyfoxhunter: I began centerfire Varmint Hunting with a Remington 722 in 222 Remington back in the mid-1960's. I have loved the cartridge ever since. I hope you jump on the Tikka in 222 Remington - I am sure you will be happy with its accuracy. I recommend the Sierra 50 grain Blitz (not the BlitzKings!) and heart/lung shots on Coyotes - many Coyotes shot thusly by me have all been dead right there or within a few yards. This 50 grain Sierra Blitz bullet at 222 speeds is amazingly lethal on Coyotes. Best of luck to you if you decide to try the Tikka. Hold into the wind VarmrintGuy +1 50g Sierra lead tip blitz is amazing on coyotes, fox, bobcats I shot Rem 788's
