I went to Big Timber today to pick up my Sharps 1877 that they have been building for me. It came out exceptionally well...

The original 1877 was made like this, to keep weight to the limit that was allowed to shoot competition. Double set triggers and the 1874 action were enough heavier, that the model 1877 was designed around external dimensions and weight.

Gorgeous rifle smile

I have thought about a 77 as well, though My thought is more like, put a 26-28" standard weight barrel on it, in a lighter caliber, like the .38-55 or .40-65, and wind up with a handy hunting rifle.

What barrel? Chambering? wood grade?

In my book, the finest commercial gun makers in the US.

Own one and hope to visit their factory in the near future. That will be an expensive stop if they happen to have anything sitting in their racks.

Now get out and shoot it.

The rifle weighs 11 pounds 9 ounces. It isn't light, but was never meant to be. These rifles were developed for competition matches and they did put an upper limit of weight on them, so you won't see light 77 rifles. They made less than 100 of them originally. The wood is 3X extra fancy American Walnut. It isn't easy to find that kind of figure in American Walnut...

Shrap,
I have a question.

Is that Shiloh's Extra Fancy or Presentation grade wood?

When you order fancy wood like that on a Shiloh ( and oay like $500 +++ extra for it ) do you simply get what they select or do they have a selection of stocks or blanks you can pick from?

When the wood came in, Kirk called me and I went to the factory and picked the blank. Basically, Kirk already had the blanks graded and it was easy to see this was what I wanted...

I think if anything, Shiloh is conservative on their wood grading. I ordered Extra Fancy on my .45-90 and it's jaw-dropping, don't know how one would upgrade it to make "presentation".

all joking aside that is one fine piece of art in one of the finest cartridges ever.

Beautiful. What 1minute said, "the finest commercial gunmaker in the US".

I have a #1 Sporter I ordered with standard wood...goodness, 25 years ago? If what is on that rifle is standard wood I shudder to think how good their others are.

B-E-A-utiful. Been lusting for a Sharps for too long now. Might just have to do something about it in the near future.

It is 45-70. I took it antelope hunting this weekend and found a nice sandstone background for another picture...

I use Smokeless powder for most of my shooting with 405 grain cast bullets and 5744 powder. I do shoot black in BPCR matches with 500 grain bullets...

I sure wish I was several years younger so I could order a Shiloh and get to shoot it. We went to Big Timber and the shop last year when we went elk hunting. Saw some fantastic guns but NO elk.

I have Shiloh Sharps rifles in 45-70 and 50-70.
Both are nice, but not that nice.

I had a standard heavy half in .40-65 for a good while. Nothing fancy, but the fit and finish was perfect. Agree. No finer gun maker in the US today. Maybe some custom shops can equal, but none finer.
