Rory, The Price list i have for the catalog no.62 still has all the extras, including engraving grades A-F also all the checkering styles. Were they not in that price list ,or did you not bother to scan them? Don

Pretty sure that's all the pages. Rick has that pricelist now, so he can double check. I think they put all the engraving/checkering in up thru 1927 (1926?), so if they left it out it was probably just that one year.

GeneB's 1923 pricelist doesn't show the engraving/checkering/extra's either. Gene, are those there?

The price list i have must be for late 1921 still listing rifles as 1899A-1899G but it does have the 1922 sporter in it??? My rogue gallery pricelist doesn't have any engraving option in it for the 99.I will see if Cheryl will scan it after her art class is thru. Don

Maybe late 1922? I've got screen captures of a #62 catalog and price list - undated. Model 1919, Savage Sporter 22 Repeating Rifle Model 1922 (redundant much?)...
But crap, just noticed it doesn't list the combination kit. Now it's got me confused.. how did they NOT include that? It was the fair haired child in early 20's.
No 410 barrel listed on pricelist either. Hmm.......

Don, can you confirm the combination kit and 410 barrel isn't anywhere in the catalog? I'm sure it's not on the price list, but I don't have all the pages of the catalog.
If it's missing those... I wonder if the #62 catalog wasn't prepared in early 1921 while they were idle? Still odd they don't have the 410.

Interesting... Off the top of my head:
I've seen ads for the 410 barrels as early as June, 1921.
I've seen ads for the combination kits in late August/September of 1921.
So a very short time where the 410 barrel was sold but not the combination kit. But I'll be danged if I know when the Model 1922 Sporter was introduced.
PS: I would guess.... #62 catalog was created late spring/summer(?) of 1921 for release in late 1921 to introduce the 1922 Sporter in 1922. Not uncommon to send catalogs out in Oct/Nov for the next year. Didn't include the combination kit because deal/design/pricing wasn't finished at time of catalog creation. The 1922 price list I posted (Jan 2, 1922) might have just been a flyer created to have an updated list including the combination kit. All guesswork, of course.

Thanks Don! Much nicer than what I had.
Side question: "Damascening of bolt and finger lever" -- anybody ever seen a damascened finger lever? At $15 I can see why not.. just curious what it would look like.

Yeah, had noticed the "machine checkering" last week. And the "stock" and "forearm" are separate - so could have a half-checkered 1899?
And an engraved 1920? That'd be cool.. not sure I've ever heard of one.

Unfortunately this info was not available to me when I wrote the book. I don't think I was on the forum 9 years ago. All of this could have made the book much longer. David

Unfortunately this info was not available to me when I wrote the book. I don't think I was on the forum 9 years ago. All of this could have made the book much longer. David Can do lots of things. 1) Can stick with the conventions we've gone by for the last 40 years with things like the 1899A was available in 300 Savage from 1922 to 1926 but the 300 Savage was never available in the 1899A Short Rifle because for some reason it became the 99C in 1922 (leaving 1921 in a limbo). 2) Or we can do things like keep the conventions we are used to and simply consolidate the dates that the 1899 switch to the catalogued letters and call them 99's. 3) Or we can redo EVERYTHING back to exactly what is in the catalogs. Which means removing all those made up model letters from 1899 to 1920 and going to catalogued names like Round Barrel Rifles, Octagon Barrel Rifles, Short Rifles, Saddle Guns, Military Rifle, etc. Names for some styles will probably change multiple times over 20 years, but if the catalog is the end all be all.. we must do that. Don't know that a much longer book would have been a very popular book. On January 3rd,1922 Savage 300 Savage Combination Kit 300 G $51.00 - 410 Gage Shotgun Barrel $10,00 Case No Charge
Price For Kit $61.00 The barrel only $10,00 1921 price - $51 gun + $10 barrel + $0 case = $61 1922 price - same 1923 - 1926 price - $51 gun + $10 barrel + $6 case = $67 Climbed slowly after that. $72 in 1926, $74.50 in 1930, $85 in 1934. Case by itself cost $15 in 1930, $17.25 in 1934 I think the case was first available by itself in... um..1927?

From what i see my late in 1921 catalog no.62 and price list still calls all versions 1899 models, the early no 63 rogue gallery catalog lists all models as 99 not 1899. The 1922 catalog Rory posted dated Jan 2 1922 lists them as 99'S Dec 31 1921 works or me as a turnover date !!!!

Actually, the 1922 pricelist has them as 1899's. As does Gene's 1923 pricelist.
So putting aside all silliness, here's what we believe to be facts.
1) ) In 1921: a) Savage production was idled for a good part of the year while they sold inventory at cost (depression in 1920) b) Savage designates models A-G c) Savage introduces the 300 Savage d) Savage introduces the combination kit
2) From 1921-1922 a) Savage stamps "SAVAGE MODEL 1899" on their rifles b) Savage refers to their rifles as '99s in public ads c) Savage refers to their rifles as 1899's in catalogs/pricelists (#62 & #63 grizzly catalog)
3) In 1923 a) Savage stamps "SAVAGE MODEL 1899" on their rifles b) Savage refers to their rifles as '99s in public ads c) Savage refers to their rifles as 99's in #63 Rogue's gallery catalog d) Savage refers to their rifles as 1899's in 1923 wholesale pricelist
4) In 1924: a) Savage stamps "SAVAGE MODEL 1899" on their rifles b) Savage refers to their rifles as 99's in public ads, catalogs and price lists
5) In 1925/1926 a) Savage stamps "SAVAGE MODEL 1899" on their rifles
6) In 1927 a) No consistent references to 1899's remain
