I Have a 400 pound steer that was bloated pretty badly last Saturday Morning. Took calf to the vet and they drained the gas by sticking hose down the throat and then putting rumen stimulation back in the gut. Brought him home and put in the lot so i can watch him, everything has been fine till tonight and he is bloated back up. He is on long stem grass hay and water and thats it,no grain whatsoever.Any ideas or comments to try? Thanks.

Sometimes once they bloat, it happens often after that. The muscles stretch and never recover.

I'll ask how bad the bloat was? I look at a calf, and try to see if the side is higher than the back bone. If it is, better be doing something about it.

I hope someone smarter than I am will come along with better advice.

Bloat was about even with the back bone i guess.Drained it off with the hose down the throat again. Called the vet and they are getting some sort of bolus ready to give him. They said if that dont work may have to sew a valve into him to help.My first problem with this so i am at a loss. Thanks for your response.

Damn.

That's turning into a pretty expensive calf.

Most bloats I've dealt with were on really, green rich graze. And if they survived the bloat, we sold them shortly thereafter.

Had a heifer recently go to the vet twice for bloat.

Turned out that she had throat cancer and could not move gas properly.

Lots of things can cause bloat.

Is the hay wetter than hell?

He was on green grass with his mother,we have had a bunch of rain recently.pulled him off and put him in the lot by himself, just feeding him off of a big round bale of hay that is dry.Vet said about 65 bucks to put a valve in him and then give him some antibiotics.

Vets don't use trocars for the gas anymore?

Trocar is a tube with a sharp angled point for punching a hole in the rumen of a calf to allow gases to escape.

Might try to give him some therabloat. And then get him on something that serves as a prophylactic for bloat as well.

You need to know where to insert the trocar.[Linked Image]
