A new to me 52, this rifle was why I was hoping for production numbers. I think made in 37? SN 413xxA
I think the strap may be original as well. What do you guys think?

The sling looks like the one on my pre A Sporter, the magazine is not original though it is an aftermarket replacement.

If you take a couple pics of the rivets on the hooks and the staples on the keepers it would be very easy to determine if it’s an original, factory Winchester sling....

Thanks guys I feel very lucky to have this one. I have been wanting a nice 22 for some time would be better with optics but glad it does not have scope blocks. Put some pictures in the gallery of the sling details looking forward to learning about it. Also hoping to find a nice original magazine that is period correct the rifle came with 3 all the same. Wondering what apperature the sight would have been fitted with? Is 1937 the correct date of manufacture?

Chris,
Beautiful gun.
Over the years several companies supplied slings to Winchester, but all were made to Winchester specs. Winchester slings and keepers had an embossed edge (some were very lightly impressed and on others embossing has been worn away from use). The 1” sling had two rivets on the hook (the rivets on your sling are different from those on the slings that I have, but there were subtle differences over the years). Believe the 1 1/4” Target sling used 3 rivets. Blued, diamond-shaped staples were used on the keepers.
I’ll try to post a pic in the Image Gallery of the rivets securing the hook on one of my slings.

I'm sympathetic with your desire for an original magazine, Chris. I didn't rest until I did the same for my 52A target rifle. But rest assured, those "W" marked ones work just as well, at least in my experience. They were made by Wisner if I'm not mistaken.

Those sporters are beautiful rifles!

I've got a very nice 52D Sporter but the trigger is
bad....way heavy!........some day I may find another trigger
assembly.

Ctw: What a beautiful, rare and classy Rifle you have there.
Good for you!
A Winchester Model 52 Sporter Rifle story if you have time for it?
About 10 years ago I was hosting a friend from the Tacoma, Washington area for a Ground Squirrel Safari here in Montana.
Unbeknownst to me, among the many Rifles he had brought along was a mint condition Winchester Model 52 Sporter as he knew I was an avid Winchester collector and he wanted "us" to shoot a few Ground Squirrels with it.
I was vehemently against it counseling my friend that that Rifle was just to "perfect" and valuable to take afield and bonk Gophers with.
He persisted and insisted and indeed we shot some Ground Squirrels with it from a "safe" set-up.
His Rifle had not been fitted for optics so we shot some closer ones with it.
Fun, kind of, but stressful for me.
Enjoy your Rifle, it's a classic!

VernAK: I am shocked!
I have shot all manner of Model 52's over the past 5+ decades and have never come across one that did not have an excellent trigger pull???
I wonder if something is broken or has been modified in your trigger works fouling it up?
Good luck finding a new trigger assembly.

You are correct......somebody had to dick with it!

Several guys have given me names of smiths that have
fixed and improved 52 triggers but they're remembering from way back and
all this guys are dead.

Poconojack thanks for the pictures, the winchester 52 book says in the begining the sporter would have the same sling as the 1873? My sling does have the blued diamonds.
On the suitable amunition can this rifle handle high speed or should I stick with standard velocity?

On a side note I have a model 70 with a sling that has the diamonds. I will have to get pictures later.

Chris, it'll handle HV ammo just fine. Feed it whatever it shoots best (probably standard vel stuff, but only one way to find out).

The pre A 52 Sporter that I currently own shoots CCI blue box Std. Velocity really well.
