What cleaner should I use to prepare à Remington 700 plastic stock for painting? Don’t really feel like sanding. I heard rubbing alcohol is all you need to remove release agent from the plastic? Any help appreciated.

I would start with Dawn dish soap, a scrub brush, and hot water. After it dries, soak a clean wash cloth in denatured alcohol (wally mart has it in the paint section) and wipe it down. Krylon makes a plastic fusion series of paints and I would use that for a base coat. Then, after you use your camo paints, consider a satin clear coat to prevent scratches and smears or rub offs from bug spray and cleaning solvents.

Clean well and wipe it down with the alcohol or acetone before the first coat. Definitely use the Krylon Fusion, no base coat needed, Just do several light coats. I would suggest sealing with a satin or flat clear when done. Let everything cure a couple days until you reassemble. One can is plenty. Here is one I did with the fusion khaki with the kryon marble spray

A quick coat of adhesion promoter makes a big difference too. I like the bulldog brand but the duplicolor is fine too.

Use vinegar as it gets the mold release agent off the best. Then detergent, I like Dreft or one with a grease cutting reputation then after several rinses a wipe down with acetone just for good measure. After the final wipe down wear gloves when you handle the stock.

I just used CRC brake cleaner. Then Rustolium multi color textured (aged iron) and some Rustolium satin clear a few days later. It’s held up fine for four years now.
