To do the job on white tail / black bear, of the selection submitted I recommend the the 270 TSX fired from a Winchester 70 Featherweight. With a heavier bullet it also would work for larger game. GW

From the practical point of ammo availability, the 308 and 243 get the nod. But I would go with the 25-06, if you pre plan, ammo should never be a problem. Meh to the 7/08, but that's just me. Because of the 270, the only need for a 25-06 was to make Remington money.

I would choose a browning blr chambered in 308. And I just happen to have one for sale.

I like the 25-06, but Id look hard at the 7mm-08 ^This. I've hunted big game with a whole bunch of chamberings from .243 to .375 H&H. I got tired of loud, hard kicking guns like my 7 & 300 magnums and really enjoy my .243 and 7mm-08. Not saying they're the best, but I shoot them more accurately because they are more pleasant to shoot.

.308 Winchester. Easy to load for, very accurate, large selection of bullets, and a lot of good factory ammo available. There is some good reason it has been a favorite of snipers and competition. .270s seem to recoil harder and the other 2 choices could cause you to do some hunting after the shot in the case of a slightly marginal hit. Not really bad mouthing the .243. With her .243 my daughter has killed 22 deer with 22 shots and lots of hogs. She is really not a hunter, just a good shot. All her shots are from a box stand with a dead rest and even so we sometimes have to look for the deer. Some have hiked off 100 yards or so. Yes, heart shot deer often do that, and not just when shot with a 243. I have had many deer make a 50 to 100 yd dash after being heart, lung shot with a 165 ballistic tip from a 30-06. Never seen any difference between '06, 270, 25-06, 260, 243, or even the 7 mag in that regard. If you want em to drop right there, you gotta get CNS, or take out both shoulders. And hitting the shoulders costs meat.

Well, most folks so far are perfectly right, especially the ones that say "pick one, they're ALL good", that is the truth. Since this is sorta about preference, mine would be the 308, even though these days, since I mostly woods hunt, it's a 6.8 Rem in an AR.
Here on the shore, the .243 is the most popular, with .270 sliding right up behind, judging what I see selling.

PS....i wont buy a 6.5Creed because i wont chase a fad lol I don't mind that it's popular. The ballistics look good. But paying a premium for a chambering in most cases is BS. In lots of cases the same rifle in .308 is more expensive if chambered in 6.5CM. Then it sounds like you need a new gun shop.

With one of the dozens of decent bullets for each caliber, they are all the same. Dead deer.
Get the 243 if you want to minimize recoil. I personally can’t tell much difference between a 150 .308 bullet at 2950 and the same bullet at 2850. You could shoot light bullets in the 270, but the 243 will be a noticeable step down in recoil.

Nice rifle FB and I love the 25-06 for a long action caliber. I built a 25-06 years back and designed it for long range. I loved that rifle, it shot quarters at 300 yards. A friend was moving to Montana and talked me out of it at a time when money was thin and with little ones scampering about I let that one go. He’s shot God only knows how many critters from whitetail, mule deer, antelope, bear, prairie dogs and everything in between with that rifle and loves it. I’m glad it found a good home and is appreciated.

Just buy a .308 and shoot factory 150gr TTSX and you’re good for anything. Like already mentioned, ammo is easy to find, ammo isn’t $4 a round and it’s inherently accurate and easy to load if you reload. Any of the calibers listed are excellent so pick whatever you’re most comfortable with and enjoy hunting. 👍 This is so true, If I knew this when I was younger, I would of saved lots of money. Now that I have aged some, I have gotten a wee bit smarter. If I think of all the critters that I have taken, a .308 Win. would have worked just fine. Hey, wish you the best.

The 25-06 is the sexy pick. I just bought a case of .308 federal blue box 150 grain for $8 a box. I'd say the 308 would be the economical way to go. They'd all work just fine, along with others that have been mentioned. Good luck with your decision.

Man, you need a 7mm-08.
Since you mentioned bear I'd say .308, .270, .25-06 and .243. in that order. Although any would do fine. PA bear can get big though.

Im also not trying to have a high recoil caliber (ie, 30-06, no reason to shoot an 06 when you can shoot a 308 in its place)
If you consider a 30-06, "high recoil", you need to forget the .308 and the .270 because the idea that a 30-06 kicks significantly more than either of them is fake news, and like political fake news it gets repeated enough that people think it is a fact. Physics states that you can't sling a bullet of the same weight at the same speed and not get the same recoil regardless of what the head stamp on the brass says, assuming the rifle weighs the same. If you used a .308 before and were comfortable with it I'd grab one of those or a .270 out of your choices. If you are looking to get away from recoil get a .243.
