Has it improved. I am thinking I need a 357 magnum or 44 mag. Or is the quality hit or miss. My other options would be Henry or plunk down the cash for a Winchester 92.

Cry once with an 1894 Marlin 357 pre safety and you'll never regret the purchase. One of the most fun guns I own.

New ones are iffy and just not the quality of the older ones.

Had been looking for a new. 357 lever gun and found a marlin at my local gun shop. We compared it to an older model and could see very little difference between the two. I was ready to buy a Henry as I have one in 41mag an really like it, but the marlin just felt good in my hands. The marlin seems to like 160-180 grain bullets.

The new machinery is a hell of a lot better than what they were building the old ones with.

Remington still makes alot of junk. Some with the Remington name on it and some Marlin. Been that way for a long time. Don't expect it to change any time soon.

the older 44's are more common & less $$ than the 357's

but even the models with x/bolt safety..post 1983 are good ones too

The troublesome years from my understanding were from 2010-2014 (ish)

I have enough of the real Marlins not to worry about buying a RemLin...

I'd buy a Henry long before the RemLin......they care about their rifles & C/S

I stopped at a Sportsman’s Warehouse the other day and compared a new Marlin and a Henry.

Way better fir and finish on the Henry. Some of the wood to metal gaps were near comical on the Marlin.

How do the Henrys shoot? I have a couple of older JM 1895 Marlins and they will shoot with most bolt guns.

Henry builds a very nice rifle no matter which you buy

how about a 16.5" 45 Colt

I only own a few, but so far I'd have to say the typical Henry is as and usually more accurate than the typical Marlin. And yes, I do love my Marlins (JM).

I have a new 1895 Trapper that’s better than any JM I’ve owned. More accurate and better fit and finish.

With that being said, I bought (online) a new 1895 GG last year that had some problems.

I recommend that you try before you buy.

This sums it up. I do like my Remlin though but they remain hit or miss albeit to a lesser extent.

I found a Marlin 357 mag locally but haven't bought it. Frankly, I am scared to. With all the bad publicity out there I don't think it is worth it. I would love to have a 357 but..

I also called around and found a M92 44 mag. Pricey, but it the long run its probably the better deal.

I always forget about the Henry, I seem to think 22's when I hear Henry.

My son acquired two Remlins a 30/30 for his wife and a 45/70 SS for himself. Both had serious problems. The 45/70 looks to have a cracked receiver just above the mag tube hole. Apparently cracking in this area started showing up when Remington took over.

I had a M92 44 mag, beautiful gun and it shot very well. I shot 300 grain cast bullets and they hit hard. Killed a big caribou bull with the combo. Wish I hadn't sold it now.

Every one of them is a project rifle to some degree. Henry has many [bleep] triggers from my experience.

I sell firearms for a living,I haven't seen any mechanical issues with the new Marlins.The only real cosmetic issues have been Marlin being able to match the stock and forend finish on some of their rifles but that's gotten much better.Personaly,I'd buy a new Marlin.

I looked ar a new Marlin 357 today, I had every intention of buying it. When I shouldered it, the front sight appear to be canted to the left a little. I also looked at a 44, that one seemed fine.

Canted sights on the new Marlins is a very common problem now. Go over to Marlinowners and you will see just how bad it is.

I have half a dozen...quality and sight alignment seems excellent on mine...or am just fortunate.

Many of the gentlemen over there admit their eyesight isn't what it used to be...
