The relevant Domestic Violence statute in California is Penal Code Section 273.5. One can be charged with either a misdemeanor or a felony.
As a misdemeanor or felony, Avenatti can be sentenced as follows:
PENALTIES:
Fine: Up to $6,000
Probation: Possible summary probation for misdemeanor / Possible formal probation for felony
Jail or Prison: Up to one year in county jail for misdemeanor / 2, 3, or 4 years in state prison for felony
Restraining Order: Up to 10 Years
AND: AB 3129 increases the firearms prohibition for those convicted of misdemeanor domestic violence in violation of Pen Code §273.5 from 10 years to life. The lifetime prohibition only applies to those convicted on or after January 1, 2019. Obviously, convicted felons also face a lifetime firearms ban.
Then ... comes the issue of the State Bar and his law license .....

In California he certainly could face discipline from the State Bar: In re Otto 48 Cal.3d 970, 971 (1989) [convictions for assault and infliction of corporal punishment on cohabitant constitute other misconduct warranting discipline in the form of suspension but not moral turpitude] ("This court, after reviewing the entire record and considering all the facts and circumstances, has concluded that Otto's conduct constituted misconduct warranting discipline and that he should be disciplined in accordance with the State Bar's recommendation.").
