I have the opportunity to purchase a modern manufacture drilling (Blaser) which has two rifle barrels and a shotgun barrel. However, one of the rifle barrels is chambered for 6.5X55 Swedish Mauser which is not a rimed cartridge. This cartridge is quite effective on big game but I am not sure it is suitable for use in a drilling.

Dos anyone here own a Blaser D99 drilling? How well does the extractor work? If it is chambered for a rimless cartridge, how do you load it? Just drop the round in? Do you need to make sure the extractor snaps over the groove?

I am guessing here a little so take advice with a grain of salt, but a solid engineering background helps. Three ways the extractor could work on a rimless cartridge - (1) spring loaded perpendicular to the round so the extractor "pops" into the rim as you insert the round fully into the chamber, or (2) the extractor is angled relative to the cartridge and cams in as the rifle is opened to engage the rim, or (3) some other way . A rimless cartridge will headspace on the shoulder. That's a great round, an I am sure Blaser has it figured out. I would have no worries purchasing it.

Can't speak to all the details but I have used a Blaser K95 and BBF97 in 6.5x55 without issue. If you choose not to follow it please PM me the lead ad I would be interested as well.

But hinged rimless guns aren't a big de as long in the world of hinged high power rifles.

Many are chambered in 8mm, 308,......

The flanged versions were from a different day.

Don't see much cordite used anymore either.

Not Blaser, but I have a BRNO 502 in .308 and had one in 30-06.

Both basically "caught" the rim on chambering, and cammed the round into the chamber as the action closed.

Not being an engineer, the extractor looked like it was cut a little taller for this purpose.

Both extracted without issue.
