Guru's, You're about to order a new barrel for yourself,

Chrome moly, Would prefer Stainless but no can do....

You generally shoot 165 grain Bullets,

What twist you ordering?

Bartlein is going to copy the original factory contour,

Any thing else we should discuss?

I'm sure a 1-12" or slower would handle the 165s but I'd still stick with 1-10".

Gotta decide between odd and even number of lands and grooves. Might want to talk to your gunsmith and see what he prefers to chamber. There are perceived pros and cons to both.

I can't imagine any "no can do" for stainless vs chrome moly if I can afford a new barrel at all, especially Bartlein, plus installation. I'm not challenging your choice, just curious why you perceive "no can do."

Bartlein is one of those who say Stainless needs to be a certain minimum contour, This original factory barrel is a #2 sporter,

Bartlein says no SS unless #3 contour,

I'll verify, but that's my understanding.

Regarding lands and grooves, I personally have no clue......

The Gunsmith is their very own in house 'smith,

otherwise it would go to Lee.

2B is the min for a SS,

Enough difference in weight to be a game changer.

I'm assuming 2.80 is 2 lbs 8 oz?

Why not use a mfg who'll give you what you want?

It read like your preference was stainless, and I don't believe those coatings go inside the bore which is where the stainless part would be most important to me. If that's not a big deal, then go cro-mo. From what I've gathered Bartlein makes a very fine barrel.

Is Bartlein doing the installation? If so, then the no shipping option is nice.

Will you be using it in conditions and circumstances that would be a bad deal for cro-mo?

This rifle could end up on a few backpack hunts or Drop camp hunts in the Rockies, possibly less than ideal conditions...

Like I said, open to ideas, Nothing set in stone yet.

My Barteins shoot very well.....my Mullerworks shoot better.

Greg at Southern Precision Rifles has .308 10" #3 Mullers in stock....and it's a proper #3 contour with a .625" diameter at 24"; not a truck axle like a Bartlein #3.

Easy decision....

On a more serious note, that Muellerworks #3 is interesting,

But adding that extra weight when I've already spent additional money on an edge fill stock,

Seems a little counterproductive, No?

You don't need a #3 to shoot good. It's way counterproductive to add that much barrel weight when you have a nice trim stock. Keep the whole package svelte and well balanced.

A Mulletworks #3 is quite a bit trimmer than a Bartlein 2B..

My last one was on a 257Wby with Defiance Rebel and 22oz MPI stock with aluminum ADL TG. I did have Karl do flat spiral fluting but the complete package with 1" shank and 25" finish length weighs 5lb 13oz.

I'd order a Rock Creek #2 in a 10 twist.

Rock Creek won't duplicate factory contours,

I just don't want any need to alter the stock,

I'm completely ignorant in this matter, don't know that any alterations would even be needed.

I would have bought a new truck with less research and fewer phone calls.

1. decide on barrel
2. decide who will chamber and complete
3.chose coating and then ship
4.stock has already been bedded, so now decide who/if rifle needs to have bedding removed and then rebed

There's nothing wrong with going CM on your rifle - particularly if it's going to get cerakoted.
If Bartlein will dupe the contour, chamber/install AND you can drive to deliver/pickup, that's not a bad way to roll.

PacNor and Hart will provide the same service and do so with a SS barrel - but it'll require shipping your rifle.
