Tell them congrats from me, too. If you were in Idaho, they'd need different guns. For ML hunts, ID doesn't allow scopes or inlines. It's open or peep sights and either flints or caps only. No powder pellets, either. Only loose powder.

My ML is a Hawken percussion with peep sights. I've never shot a scoped inline for comparison. With my old eyes, a scope would definitely help, though.

Thanks again, guys. We butchered both elk yesterday...man, that was a looong, busy day. We now have about 150 lbs. of elk burger in the freezer. I didn't weigh wall of the better cuts, but there is a substantial amount. My younger daughter wants Green Chile Elk Stew today, and with the fresh snow on the ground, that sounds like a dandy idea.
RC, New Mexico is pretty relaxed with their muzzleloader requirements. Both girls could have made their respective shots with open sights, but we're allowed scopes and decided to use them. Neither of the scopes left 3X on the hunt.

Fantastic, and with old technology. People don't realize how much hunting is necessary to get big game with black powder...

OutStanding!! Congratulations to your daughters!
Father of the Year award goes to you, SP! Takes a special dad (and a tired one too) to organize all the logistics of a big time first elk hunt for his two kids.

Just got back from unit 15 for the youth Muzzleloader antlerless elk hunt. This was a first for both elk and muzzleloader for the girls, and my 12-year-old's first big game hunt. Day 1 and 2 were pretty slow with only a couple of sightings and no action. My youngest daughter shot her cow on the 3rd morning at 125 yards, and my older daughter got hers that evening at about 80 yards. Made for a busy/late day but the girls were ecstatic! Still have the unloading/cleaning up/butchering to do but it was a great hunt. The weather was great with days in the 40's and 50's and nights in the teens and 20's. We went down before Thanksgiving and had our big dinner in at camp. Guess we'll see what next year brings! Congrats to the young ladies!

Jealous. None of my girls will go hunt with me.

Congratulations to dad and the girls. They are very fortunate to have a father that will take the time to help them get their elk, plus take the cows apart. They developed a memory that will last forever. Thanks dad and grandpa.

Thanks again, guys. The green chile elk stew is almost done. Just needs a little more simmer time. Add some shredded cheese and a little sour cream once it's in the bowl and it will be muy bueno!
