I'd pay $800 up here for one in 357 or 357 Max in a heartbeat.

They are about as common as an 1895 up here.

You guys are lucky, you have Gunbroker, just punch in 24 357 or Stevens 240 and bang, there's one for sale. I've been looking for both up here for years now with no luck excpet for a 240 on CGN that the wacko wants $1300 for, good luck.

Picked it up via a trade.

And if anyone has to have one, it can be had for a nice Savage 99 in trade. smile

If not, no biggie.

I am taking it grouse hunting this Christmas break.

It’s definitely a niche rifle. Prior to me discovering this one, I didn’t know 357 was even an option. I already have my late grandfather’s 24 in 22 Mag over 410. I won the Dead Possum Award mostly because of that gun.

So I have a soft spot for them. What can I say.

Roy,

Somewhere above a 99EG in 300, and below a Monarch. Lots of wiggle room. smile

Merry Christmas

This weeks episode of The Last Alaskans on Animal Planet, the young trapper Charlie pulled his father's 24 out of a storage barrel, test fires it with the old ammo then goes rabbit hunting for supper. He never mentions Savage or the clambering but the box of Remington ammo he pulled out was .222 and the shotgun shells were 20 gauge.

I saw that show and didn't make out the rifle barrel caliber. Charlie did say it wasn't good enough for bear! I kind of agree...

I know a guy down state who hunts deer with a rifle in 357 Mag. He has killed deer with it to include one really big buck. His property limits him to about 30-40 yards max distance for shooting. I killed 2 deer with a .44 Mag pistol. Looks like I need to try out the .357 Mag now.

You can get around 1700fps with a 158gr XTP bullet with max load. I would think that would take a deer out to 50+ yds with good shot placement.

Keith,

I am thinking bow range if I do it. Lots of time between now and next season.

Take care...

I once had a Marlin 1894 in 44-Special/44-mag. I loved that carbine. A buddy of mine has an older brother with a 1894 in 38/357-mag and its a hoot to shoot. Thirty-eight specials are like shooting pellets but I was impressed at how well 125-grain 357s stepped out there. This probably will get me some flack on a Savage forum, but try one - I'm sure you will like it too.

I've had 3 different .357 carbines over the years and have taken several deer with each. They kill just fine well beyond bow range. 125 yards is easy. You can get nearly 2000 fps out of a 158 grain bullet with a max load of Hodgdon Lil Gun.

You can kill a deer with a 22RFLR. I've done it several times using a spotlight. Way back in the day when I was still in high school. Wouldn't even try to do it now.

It sure as hell don't take head shots or a spotlight to kill deer with a .357 carbine. You should stick to comments on things you know something about rather than talking out your ass.

I didn't see the movie but the ammo they showed is meaningless. There is no way they'll have an actor put live ammo in a gun on the set and whatever he appears to pull out may not have fit. Steve McQueen's mare leg in whatever his TV show was in the 50's was a 44-40. They pretended it was a 45-70. As short as that rifle was it wouldn't have held but two 45-70's. He used to appear to blast away five or six times without reloading. There is no way it would have even held that many rounds of 44-40.
I don't know if I've mentioned this before but I worked in the Hollywood movie industry occasionally during the 1990's and early 2000's. Movies, etc., are all one big illusion with just enough reality to make it believable. The adage, "The best lie contains an element of truth" applies here.
Sorry for the digression. Some of the people I hunted with when I was a teenager talked about making a silencer on a 22 rimfire by putting a big wad of tape with a hole through it and taking taking deer out season. They said you couldn't hear the shot 50 feet away. They hunted at night with flashlights. Any kind of silencer was illegal at that time in Florida and of course they were breaking hunting laws too. We hunted with them during deer season but didn't participate in their other illegal activities. They were poor and needed the meat.
