Finally found letter I misplaced 8 months ago (why it wasn't with gun at Sauk City Savagefest)!
Number 173,2xx. "rifle was originally made in caliber .303 Savage and has the "M" notation next to the serial number designating it as a military model. The rifle was accepted from the factory in Utica, N.Y. on April 6, 1915 and later shipped with many others on April 10, 2015 to the Quebec Savings and Trust Co. in Montreal P.Q.-Canada. This company later became the Canada Permanent Trust Co. The trust company was somehow tied in with the Montreal Polo Club, located in the Westmount area of Montreal. The officers of the polo club called themselves "Montreal Home Guard" and placed the order with Savage as they felt that an invasion by the Germans was imminent. Also according to the serial record, there should be a number 914 stamped on the butt plate (YES). The bayonets that accompanied these rifles to Canada have the same three digit number stamped on their crossguard, effectively mating a particular bayonet to a particular rifle. This model 1899 is an interesting and rarely asked about version." June 11, 1996.

Included was copy of ledger page this rifle was on. Includes ~ 16 other 1899D's sent to Canada same shipment. Hard to read ledger copy. Makes one appreciate how hard it could be to provide info on particular gun. JTC's efforts will likely not be duplicated from staff in corporate office?

Thanks for posting. I haven't seen a bayonet with the rack number stamped on it. But then I haven't seen many bayonets.

IIRC, nobody on this forum has seen a bayonet stamped with the number. Had a thread on this months back..

"Included was copy of ledger page this rifle was on. Includes ~ 16 other 1899M's sent to Canada same shipment."

What part of the balance of the log sheet shows 1899 .250-3000's?

Number 173,227; 229; 232 plus maybe 8 more are 250-3000's. Some writing over top of some caliber entries. Sheet ends in most being 250's.
