So for load work, I mounted up an extra 5.5-22x50 Nightforce in Seekins rings I had laying around.

Me too. I tried to order one this past June and McMillan says that they no longer provide that finish, so I've another McSwirly coming this way.

How did you get a game scout with no paint? I bought one and they said it had to be painted. Nice looking rifle!

In my defense, I sold three guns and built one, so I'm at a net loss of two, meaning my downsizing effort is working......

I'm sure that net loss is merely a temporary setback.

As stated before, I knew I was gonna build sooner or later, but first I was waiting for the right gun at the right price to show up for the donor. Coming back from my Montana coyote hunt in October, I stopped at the Cabelas in Mitchell, SD, and low and behold, the was a slightly used Sendero II in 7 mag on the rack. Wasn't the best price, but I had a bunch of points stashed just for a special occasion, so it followed me home.

The gun had a EGW 20 MOA picatinny rail on it that I could only get 1 of the 4 screws out of. I sent the action to LRI to get them out, plus flute this bolt and a couple others at the same time. Great work and quick turn around.

Next problem was trying to decide on the barrel and stock. I didn't want to build a heavier version like last time, and kind of had the hankering for a Proof barrel, but was having a hard time stomaching the double price tag over a regular tube. Finally this Game Scout came up for sale on another site, and was advertised as a Rem Varmint inlet, with a "primer" base coat on it. As there was no pics in the ad, I had him send me a couple, and immediately knew what I was looking at, & told him I'd take it.

So my blue print was taking it's own direction, a Proof barrel was next on the menu. However, when the stock showed up at my door, I tore into it ASAP to find that it had a Remington Sporter inlet. Hot damn, I don't have to drop the coin on a Proof barrel!

Next up was finding a Bartlein 2b 8 twist. I only found one online, and was waiting for the Black Friday, Cyber Mon deal to kick in, but it never materialized. So I logged in and bought it. Several days went by, but it showed no movement on shipping, so I called them up to find out the last one in stock was bought 30 minutes before me. Well, schitt. I quick put out several WTB ads, and scored one in no time flat, and we're back in the game.

As soon as the barrel arrived, I had everything boxed and sent off that afternoon to the smith.

Somewhere in that time span, I had the scope choice narrowed down between a Nightforce 2.5-10 or a Leupold VX5 HD 3-15x44. I really wanted more than the 10X, but it's hard to pass up the NF's reputation. I had a pile of Cabelas points I could burn on the Leupold, but just couldn't make the leap. My decision was finally made when I ran across this NF online for a pretty good price. I had already scored a good deal on the Seekins rings, and had kept the Seekins rail from the last PRC, so the scope & hardware was taken care of. Lastly, the Trigger Tech trigger was a hold over from the previous PRC too, making it all a bit less painful than paying new prices for everything.

Based on load work from the first gun, I shot 3 shot groups in half grain increments from 59 to 61 grains of H-1000 with moly plated & pointed 140 grain Berger VLD's in the lands a bit. I set the target at 200 yards, and the results were kinda ho hum, from a hair over MOA to a hair under 1 1/2 MOA.

I watched the ES go from 22 to 8 to 3 to 8 & back up to 23 fps, with the 60 grain load of 3 fps spread having the least vertical as well.

So I called it a day, loaded the truck up and went home to clean the gun and load a bunch with 60 grains to do a seating test.

The next day for the seating test I started in the lands, and them went off the lands in .010" increments. Testing at 200 again, and the results were nothing to write home about. Seems every one of barrels need 100 or so rounds down the tube before things start coming around, and this one appears to be no different.

So back to the house to clean and load up a bunch of 60 grains in the lands and shoot it......

The next day I headed out to my mid range spot, starting at 100 yards, shooting 3 shot groups.

Clean/cold to begin.....

100 yds - 1 1/4"

200yds - 1 1/2"

300yds - 1 5/8"

400yds - bust (I was testing 142 SMK's also & the 6 shots all lumped together)

500yds - 3 1/2"

600yds - 3 7/8"

500 & 600 yards targets:

I had bought two 500 count boxes of the Bergers on the 1st go around, & probably had 800 left for this project.

Looks like this barrel has come around........

After all the testing was done, I had a dozen rounds left, so I decided to give them a go at a big pile of rocks at 950 yards. Luckily I had my serious testing done by then, as the headwind had picked up to 10-15 mph.

I had only done a quick look at JBM previously for my drops to 600, so took a WAG of 20 MOA for the 950. Ended up being right on the money, best as I could tell with the wind. Ran the numbers later, and confirmed it.

Packed my schitt and went home, feeling pretty good about the day.
