Jeff- great story!

I raised several labs and have a ton of good hunting memories they provided over the years, but I have a short story about a pit bull. My oldest daughter somehow managed to get a pit bull when she was about 20 and living out of the house. At this point I didn't have any dogs and intended to keep it that way. We were supposed to babysit the dog for a couple of days (12 years later we still had the dog :)). Beve McQueen was his name.

I was going out for a sharptail hunt one morning and my wife asked why don't you bring Beve with you, he could use the exercise. Sure why not, he can't hurt anything. He hadn't been around any gunfire, but he was the opposite of a skittish dog- so should be fine. As we headed out into the prairie I could tell he was glad to be along. Then something a little odd happened. He started sniffing in the cover- wild rose, buffalo berry, snowberry and lo and behold, he flushed a grouse! I shot that grouse and it drifted into some rather thick cover. I got Beve to go in there and see if there was any chance he might even retrieve the bird. He was rustling in there making quite a bit of noise and then it stopped. I went in after him and there he was with a still live bird under his paw- well I'll be damned smile. We had several nice grouse hunts after that day, who would have thought.

They require a gentle hand. Their spirit can be quickly crushed with a heavy hand.

Didn't feel like braving the cold to run ( I have it on good authority that some cold weather running gear is under the tree!) So went to the gym and spent 20 minutes on the stairmaster and then ran for a while.

Upland might be some of the funnest exercise a guy can get, other than, well, you know. whistle

What are you guys using? I have a Citori Upland Featherweight O/U.... alloy receiver, straight stock, 12-ga, 2-3/4" shells only. It's actually my second one. The first one, they used pallet-wood for the stock (no figuring) and I loved that gun. It was just getting properly scratched up when the plating started to flake off the receiver in spots. I sent it in, and was told it could be up to a YEAR... had to send it back to Japan for re-plating and so on. I was not amused. A few weeks later I came home from work and my wife said "you got a gun in the mail" (!) and damned if they didn't send me a new one! Is that even legal?! The wood is much prettier which is kind of a bummer actually in a field gun.

I have an old SKB/Ithaca (70's), 26" modified/improved- gun is beat up, but shoots like the dickens smile had a Winchester 101 for a while, but always went back to the SKB, so sold it (actually traded it for a Winchester M70 Featherweight)

Indeed it is! smile There's a bit of snow visible at the tops of a few of the peaks around here.

Not a fan of this area culturally (gated communities, etc) but the surrounding small mountains are steep and spectacular. It's about 8 miles there and back to the palm oasis at the end of the trail we were on. We are planning on going back with some water and snacks. This was an exploratory trip... My 10-yo nephew was running out of gas, though he's a trooper for sure and fun to hike with. We set a fast pace and he kept up.

They're way better than anything the 80's or the Army has ever issued. Not sure why I'm running since I thought I retired from doing this, but I'm feeling good so why not?
