Sorry guys, my career was in the power generation industry, and transformer explosions and fires occur occasionally. And there are a heck of a lot of transformers out there. For there to be one in NY the same day as one in LA is not strange. And it is highly unlikely that either transformer malfunction was in any way connected to the 911 outage in an unrelated area of the country. Highly unlikely.
