31. Nautilus, SSN-571. 1st nuke sub. it made history to be the first to sail under the north pole. many of us remember it. Up for auction now is a copy of the famous cruise map of going under the north pole made by SSN-571. The story of this map is they were handed out to crew members from the ships store. It was signed by the original crew. These aren’t commercial copies. This account was made from my uncle, who served on board SSN-571 as the storekeeper. When it was time to clean up the shop, they were to be tossed out. My uncle was a pack rat, and here you have it. Its a true piece of naval history. It is old, fragile, yellowed, and frayed on some corners from being rolled up for what, 60 years? Its about 34” x 30”. Remember, this is a ships copy, NOT the actual map. Still, very rare to see one in its original condition off the SSN-571 with a story....................350.00

ok, this is the story with my collets. first off, im not a machinest. my father was (r-i-p) it is a set of 28 collets and some cutters. its a good spread of sizes since he was a gen-contractor.
with the help of a member here, we determined that the collets being offered for 150 plus ship was well undervalued.
so i pulled my offer.
i offered them as is pot luck, but the majority of those interested insisted that i give more info on them, like sizes, maker, wear etc...i knew nothing about them and had them stuffed in a box ready to ship 1500 miles away.
i understand people dont want to pay 150 for chinese junk when they can get new chinese stuff shipped for 75.00. fine. i understand the concern they had for what i was selling.
but sometimes it backfires.
in this case, if someone just bought it as is, like i advertised it, they would have made out like a bandit.
why?
im honest and knew they were good. i told all the people calling on these collets that they were old, and that my dad told me in 1996, that the sound of quality is they chime like a bell when you strike them. all these collets are well over 30-40 years old. turns out most came with his south bend lathe when he bought it.
i just had one person help me determine that what i had was much more valuable than thought.
i had to pull my offer because he wouldnt give me a straight answer as to the value per collet.
i went to ebay and based on maker alone, i saw why. my set is well worth 300.00 shipped. i sent this info to the interested party and never heard back from him.
i was and still am willing to reward this fellow for his knowledge by allowing him to make an offer, but im not going to let it go for 150.00.
hope he calls back.
