My Ruger .223 is a 12-twist and loves 40g bullets. Not so much with the 55g.

Not that I care. The 40's do what I want, which is fun plinking while the other rifles cool down. If I need heavier I'll grab my .243 or .257.

Coyote Hunter - NRA Patriot Life, NRA Whittington Center Life, GOA, DAD - and I VOTE!

No, I'm not a Ruger bigot - just an unabashed fan of their revolvers, M77's and #1's.

A good .30-06 is a 99% solution.

Seconds on the Tikka. Get a 1-8” or a 1-10”, them pm me for load data, as long as a 50 gr Ballistic Tip at 3400 FPS and half-inch or better groups interest you.

You dumb SOB.

Savage is changing the Lightweight Hunter and the old style can be found for $450 online. I own one in 223 and 6.5 Fudgepack. The 223 is silly accurate. It has a 7 twist. The rifles feel great in the hand. The stock trigger is great. The only thing I don't love about it is the magazine and magazine catch are kinda cheesy.

I have a hunch that within the next 6-9 months Savage will have a rebate available on the LWH. When I bought mine, it had a $100 rebate. They run one about once a year.

Another vote for the CZ 527, 18.5" barrel, a little under 6 lbs. If you're looking for a plinker put a NECG (New England Custom Gun) receiver sight on it. No d&t required.

A couple of really good reasons to own a 223 -

.223 Remington--Centerfire Favorite
The .223 Remington is the most widely-used centerfire rifle cartridge in the developed world. In its 5.56x45 military form, it is the primary issue ammunition for the U.S. Military and NATO forces. It is a popular sporting cartridge, and probably the most commonly used centerfire varmint cartridge. In our Readers' Poll, the .223 Rem (both standard and improved) ranked first among preferred varmint rounds. The .223 Rem is efficient and versatile. It can sling 40-grainers past 3650 fps, and deliver 90gr VLDs accurately at 1000 yards. Its parent case, the .222 Remington, was once a mainstay of benchrest competition. Today, with custom match bullets, the .223 Remington can still deliver impressive accuracy, shooting well under quarter-MOA in a good rifle.

I equate the 223 to the kid's story of The Little Engine That Could - it does more than you think is possible.

A little railroad engine was employed about a station yard for such work as it was built for, pulling a few cars on and off the switches. One morning it was waiting for the next call when a long train of freight-cars asked a large engine in the roundhouse to take it over the hill. "I can't; that is too much a pull for me", said the great engine built for hard work. Then the train asked another engine, and another, only to hear excuses and be refused. In desperation, the train asked the little switch engine to draw it up the grade and down on the other side. "I think I can", puffed the little locomotive, and put itself in front of the great heavy train. As it went on the little engine kept bravely puffing faster and faster, "I think I can, I think I can, I think I can."

As it neared the top of the grade, which had so discouraged the larger engines, it went more slowly. However, it still kept saying, "I—think—I—can, I—think—I—can." It reached the top by drawing on bravery and then went on down the grade, congratulating itself by saying, "I thought I could, I thought I could."

drover

223 Rem, my favorite cartridge - you can't argue with truckloads of dead PD's and gophers.

mjbgalt,

For your information, I really LOVE my little Remington Model 7615P, police carbine in 5.56mm NATO, as it is very accurate, soft kicking & "just my size", as I'm 60 inches tall & 86 pounds.
(I hope to take an Axis buck & at least one feral pig in late March on the TSRA "Ladies Exotics Hunt".)

Sincerely, DarlaG

And the single shots were a pointless exercise as like anyone, I wanted to plink and have fun and it was slow and awkward. The ar15 just wasn't quite the answer either.

The rifles that include the 223 are normally built for standard sized rounds like 243 or 270 etc...and the 223 is sort of an afterthought and the mag is half assed designed to fit the bigger space, sometimes causing problems like the one I mentioned.

The round itself is great, usually accurate and affordable and no complaints there.

Without spending a grand, what rifles have you guys found to be a good fit for the round?

I have tried the Remington 700, Remington Model 7, CZ 527, Howa Mini, Tikka T3x, and the AR 15 in 223 Remington. I agree the Remington 700 was built for the larger stuff and you end up with a heavier rifle than necessary for the cartridge. The Remington Model 7 was light and carried well I just didn't care for the 20 inch barrel. In my opinion the muzzle blast of a 223 is pretty obnoxious on any barrel less than 21-22". Plus the light barrel shot ok. I have had two CZ 527's in the 223 and they were both very accurate and the action is sized perfectly for the cartridge. You can basically scope a CZ and have it weigh as much as a Remington 700 without a scope. The same could be said for the Howa Mini which I have now. I have not shot the mini yet, so I can't speak to it's accuracy. The Tikka T3x is a long action with a bolt stop to make it work for the shorter stuff. It wasn't as light as the CZ, Howa, or the Remington Model 7, and mine shot ok. The trigger was nice, but I didn't like it enough to keep it. The AR15 was not for me. I just couldn't warm up to it. My recommendation is to look at the CZ 527 and the Howa Mini.

Folks who "know" and "do" as "much" as you,are best served by asking questions...rather than giving "answers".
